Both sets of head bearings appeared fine, so regreased and put back in,
though the front wheel bearings felt rough.

With having no manual for the goose, how tight am I supposed to screw the
bearings top thing down? I read in the TZR manual to do it up, and loosen
then up a few times to make sure they have settled right, but without
knowing where the C spanner is either, I ended up just tapping it gently
    shut with a hammer... :-/

New tyres on, and possibly some new bearings on tomoz, and hopefully, it
should be like riding a new bike :)

This is for my FJ1200, but may apply to you:
There are two ring nuts and one is just used to hold the other in place.
Tighten the lower ring nut to 36 ft lb (50 Nm, 5.0 m-kg),
loosen it COMPLETELY then retighten to 2.2 ft lb (3 Nm, 0.3 m-kg).
Rotate ring nut by hand until slots in both ring nuts line up. Hold the
lower with a suitable tool and tighten upper if necessary.
