Front Fork Seal Driver ?

Discussion in 'Motorbike Technical Discussion' started by Iowa883, Jan 3, 2005.

  1. OK, fair enough - never seen it done that way, and I'm not sure I'd want
to do it that way, but yes. Apologies.

  2. I follow the manual...pretty darn simple on a GL1000.
See the above manual reference. I'm not disagreeing with you
and it may work for you. I just wouldn't do it that way.

Leave the front hang over the end
    Lift bike
    remove front wheel and axle
    remove fender
    remove brake
undo bolt at bottom of leg
Tube stays in tree and adjustment isn't lost
This works on my Honda and H-D, the Ducati's are a different story

Still don't see a need for two piece driver for fork seal, however,
other places it can come in handy.

That would be the damper tube bolt that sometimes requires an industrial
strength impact driver? Isn't there often some kind of fluid in those
things too? Damn complicated crap. Springers were good enough for Grampa.

  6. That's what YOU think...trust me it sucks when you're out
riding along at a nice clip at speeds that ensure chrome
braclets and you get passed by some speed demon on GSXR1000R
and at your next gas stop that power ranger turns out to be
old enough to be your father. Granted a guy 58 isn't really
all that old imo...but some of the kids here will think it's
    ancient.

End of WHAT? End of the curb? End of the Grease pit(OF's
    know what I'm talking about)

Yep a center stand is GREAT for that.
I can to that with just a few bolts.
Yep, being a late 70's UJM it's a bit more involved than
    newer bikes.
    Yep X2 for me.
? Have to pull the plugs at the top and the drain at the
bottom. Pull the springs THEN undo a allen bolt at the
BOTTOM of the fork from the inside.
What adjustment? It always lines up just right, UNLESS your
tubes are bent...or extended and that is just stupid.
If it works for you great. I just always remind myself that
no matter what something looks like if it works it's good.
Dusted these and CBX's regularly...US89 belongs to old wings
    and modern sportbikes.

I'm the crusty old fart passing in the corner on a 'slower' bike. I
would probably just have to give it all to the courts on a modern liter
bike. I like really twisty roads that the kids can't use that squirt
power on and are forced to RIDE in the corners. ;-> I wouldn't do this
with a girder or springer front. (unless I was wobbling on some vintage tin)

    Floor lift
I'd undo the bolt at the bottom first while the spring pressure is on it
.. Helps to keep it from spinning (internal) on you.
Funny, but I can tell the difference of 1 or 2 mm distance of the tube
in the trees. Extended is stupid but tubes run up a bit can really add
    some turn-in.
They were the dawn of the superbike era, but that's why I have the Ducatis.

Funny, but I can tell the difference between 1 and 2 mm on my handly little
steel rule when I put them back in. I'd be lying through my teeth if I said
I could detect handling differences in less than 1 inch increments.

Still you got my point eh? 8^) I tend to usually not get
lost by newer bikes in the twisty stuff, but then there's a
    straight bit and...well Honda claimed a 80Hp @ 7,000rpm and
you know that was optomistic. 25 years and no rebuilds and
    it STILL hauls butt!

You do realize that none of your bikes are slower (stock)
than mine. ;^) But I LIKE my 79' GL1000, might have to put
some MX bars on it to spice up the handling in the twisty
    stuff.
79' Gl1000 (OG) 'cause his knuckles drag and he's simple
    minded.

Stand what's that? Heck where I live these days I don't even
have a garage and being montana I have to do all work
quickly. It's about time for new front springs anyway.
GAH! Forgot the bolt head IS external...why as a matter of
fact I do read over the manual on occasion. Just for fun,
    HONEST!
    I'll keep it in mind.

Oh yeah, I had a '75 wing that even had a kicker hiding under a cover.
Stripped off every single thing that didn't make it go. Was a fun cafe
bike and really fooled a bunch of folks. They go well with 100 pounds of
chrome and fenders and lights and other odd bits removed.

Try riding on the track instead of the street. Little changes can mean a
lot. (Especially when we are trying to pare off tenths each lap)

On the newer "upsidedowm" style forks the only way to remove the seal
driver is for it to be split. The fork tube that the seal get fitted
into is held in the t stem and the tubes on the lower part end with the
axle mounts. The seal is installed upside down and if the seal driver
were on the tube below the seal it cold not be sliped off the tube as is
done with conventional forks. The driver must be removed by being able
    to split in 2 parts.

    Bruce,
Thanks for the info. I am going to do a set of forks on a YZ85 with upside
down forks. I will see what I run into.
I can't picture it but I will find out.
    Thanks,
