    Yes.

"Stop lamps may operate in conjunction with either the front or the rear
brake, or both. On machines first used on or after 1 April 1986, the stop
lamps must operate by the application of each system."

But sir might have to find one...
IF it came as original equipment and the MOT tester spots it is not working.

Bit like the indicators on my old Suzuki. Tester spotted the indicator
    switch
and insisted that there should be indictors fitted despite the age.

Take the bike to a more sensible MOT station. It's not like having a
switch but no indicators makes the bike dangerous in any way.

    He was wrong.

The lights; relays and switchgear can still be in situ as long as the
    lenses are taped over.

I acksherly applied the lozzo method and went to a different testing
    station.

But I thought that if the lights were attached they had to work.
Since the relay was knackered and the 'new' one had yet to be sourced I just
    took the
    indicators off the bike.

Similar to the OP about a front brake switch.

That's what I would have done.

Yes sorry I was wrong. If you tape the lenses you have to tape ALL
lenses (inc brakes, headlamp etc.) which then gives you a daylight only
    MOT.

However the test only applies to the "direction indicators" and the
    telltale not the actuating equipment.

I had an old 6v machine fail because the flash rate was wrong so I took
the indicators off. He then failed it because the battery wasn't man
enough [1] to sound the horn without the engine running *AND* charged me
    for a retest.

**** you Gerry Ingram, ten years and how many bikes have I MOT'd, not a
penny from me since, eh, EH!!

If the wiring is in situ then I'd agree that's a justifiable failure but
disconnect it, tape over it or simply unscrew it.

    [1] Hence the flash rate
