    "Professional Goat Riders"?
    I remember it. Something about a discussion concerning a 300lb drunk/
drugged woman sprinting 200 yards to the center of a roadway and then
"dart like a gazelle" in the path of an oncoming motorcycle....and the
motorcycle had no time to react and ended up hitting the woman. The
comment was made that it would've been better to run off the road into
the ditch or lay the bike down than to hit the big mammoth sasquatch
    in the road.

It grew from there with everyone having their take on what would be
better....hit the sasquatch in the roadway, or avoid it by laying the
    bike down.

I seem to also recall it was the same bunch who jumped in here trying
to claim a bicycle was riding down California highways in 1964 @ 70mph
+ and showing all these mathmatical solutions of a bicycle going from
0-70mph in 2 seconds. These are the same people who also can't seem to
find their home or know when they're home when they answer a
    telephone.

It's amazing what stupid discussions this group can have....

Yeah maybe Bill is right. I do recall the day some SOB cut me off, so
I layed er down and saved the day. I didn't even use the front brake
so I didn't go over the handlebars! Good thing my decades of ridin the
mean streets provided me with the experience that saved the day, or
I'd be dead instead of fuckin about with yooos guys.

After all, my favorite place to be is skiddin' along on top of an out
control hunk of spark throwin' metal with 2 or 3 gallons of gasoline
    underneath me!

YEEEHAAAWWWWWW! Kinda like Slim Pickens ridin' the H-bomb to Moscow in
    Dr Strangelove.

Thanks for settin' us all straight Bill.

Whoops.. It's not been my intention of setting anyone straight.. You ride
    yours and
I'll ride mine.. "End of the day".. Middle of the day.. or the start of the
    day.. Sand and
gravel scattered on asphalt/concrete, Ice, or a fuel spill on road surface
    will **** up
the performance of any motorcycle.. Emergency application of brakes under
    those
    conditions is certain disaster..

I suspect that I can stop my motorcycle under ideal conditions, as fast as
    anyone ..
hmmm.. Some on this newsgroup can testify to that, and recently.. Talking
    about a
Textbook emergency stop on a road surface with those conditions, is
    downright
stupidity.. Staying with that motorcycle in the face of certain collision
    isn't just stupid,
    it is insane..

Oh yeah? How ‘bout this one? I’m riding on 93 outside of Radium, with
three other riders. I’m in the lead setting a brisk pace on my
hopelessly outdated V-twin Virago. . I came smoking into one of the
many blind left hairpins to see a moose taking a leak right in my
line. What did I do? What /could/ I do? I had to “Lay-R-Down” on the
left side and slide under the moose, simultaneously frightening the
moose off of the road and using the left side of my leathers to
squeegee the moose urine off of the asphalt, thus providing safe
passage for my comrades. Damage to the bike was minimal, the moose is
unharmed, my leathers look great with the scuffs, and my friends are
alive today because of my heroic actions.

(In case you’re wondering, there is /no way/ I just made up the moose
story to explain a lowside caused by too much throttle at the apex of
the turn after a clumsy transition from the brake or a failure to ride
to the road conditions. That would suggest a /crash/ caused by series
of errors on my part – too much speed for the conditions, poor
manipulation of the controls, etc. Yeah, like that could happen.)

What the lay er down to avoid a crash disciples fail to appreciate is,
under any conditions you will have more control of a modern motorcycle
by keeping the rubber to the road. There is more available traction
there, than by sacrificing all control by grinding the shiny bits on
the asphalt. More control translates into a variety of options to
avoid the crash or at the very least reduced speed at impact (if
    inevitable).

That includes riding challenges such as sand, gravel, wet leaves or
    oil.

Bailing out of a sticky situation, and abandoning all control of the
vehicle isn't just stupid, it is insane.

Thanks, Bill. It's good to be home, just wish the weather gods were a
    little happier to see me.

Had a good ride segmant Friday, from Van Horn I rode down to Marfa, then
down to Presidio. Had lunch there at El Patio restaurant. I had
enchiladas with green sauce, very good.

From there I took the river road to Lajitas. This is the best road in
Texas I've been on for motorcycles. Up, down, right, left, with no
traffic to speak of. Highly reccomended.

Lajitas has sure changed since the last time I was there, not for the
better in my opinion. I once passed an afternoon at the greneral store
there, drinking beer with the mayor. The mayor at the time was a goat,
having narrowly beaten the cigar store wooden indian in a close election.
All of that is gone now, and there are condos in its place.

After that, I weent through Big Bend Park, up to Marathon, then on route
90 to Del Rio. It's a long stretch from Marathon to Del Rio. About 4.8
gallons worth. I have a 5 gallon tank, and was sweating a gas station
that was open at 8 PM. Finally made it to one without having to push.

Do us all a favor and take your horseshit somewhere else. No one here
knows anything about how you ride....or even if you ride. All your
lecturing horseshit serves no purpose...especially to the ones here
who know how each of us ride.

Do you honestly believe you know anything about how someone here rides
    a motorcycle?

My dad's riding isn't even close to what I'd consider to be like mine,
but he doesn't have a problem with stopping a motorcycle. As was
pointed out earlier, several people in this newsgroup can testify to
his ability to stop in an emergency. Who in this newsgroup can do the
same for you? I've never ran into anyone who has ever rode with you.
The one and only person who would've been able to, you bailed on him
and he had to ride alone to Texas and back.

I was not impugning any ones ability to ride, however if you or your
Dad honestly believe you can stop a motorcycle faster or control it
better by grinding metal and plastic on the asphalt than using your
brakes, you are either horribly wrong or not able to use your brakes
    effectively.

Now that fact applies to everyone and pretty much every bike made in
the last two or three decades. It is not unique to Texas riders.

    Apparently, there's a difference between Canadian logic....and
    EVERYONE ELSE'S!

Not one time did ANYONE say anything about controlling a motorcycle
while it's on it's side grinding along the pavement. Not one time did
ANYONE say anything about stopping faster while a motorcycle is on
    it's side grinding pavement.

You can't sound intelligent any other way, so you insert your own shit
hoping someone would argue with you?

Well, I've wanted to ride that road since the first time I saw it in a
car. It's so damn far from anything, I figured I'd better hit it while I
was within a couple of hundred miles.

I was going to ride the hill country Saturday on my way back, but the
weather put the kibosh to that idea. It's close enough to ride from
    Austin, though.

Yep, I'll have to go back to work sometime, but we'll have to see if we
can't manage to catch up to y'all sometime. I dpn't know if the
ElectraGlide will be able to keep up with all those shiny new bikes,
    though.

<groan.. mumble, mumble> Awwwww... Sheeeyit.. I've been riding this
old Green Vulcan for over ten years.. Never "ground any metal or plastic"
on it... yet.. "stop a motorcycle faster" or "control it better" wasn't in
    any
part of my contribution to the original question.. That's all your own
    fabs..
Anyone in the positions I've referred to, were already out of control and
at the mercy of elements on the pavement and another vehicle.. If you
"honestly believe" that you should ride a motorcycle under the wheels
of a semi .. while trying to do an impossible stop on a surface like that..
    you are nuts..

lol.. There has sure been a rash of them, these past few months.. These
guys are buying some serious motorcycles.. Valkyries, Voyagers, Ventures
and GoldWings.. My old Green Vulcan gets plumb intimidated.. but, they
don't have to wait for us too long.. <chuckle>

Besides.. no one is competing on most of our rides.. that's a good thing..

Are you settling in the Austin area, George ?

<grin> There you go with all that nasty talking, again..
Just because you got special dispensation for top
posting, doesn't mean that you'll get a pass for all this
unseemly and vulgar language, even though it is rep-
    resented by initials..

Sad to say .. but, I believe your tendency to this very
bad habit is being provoked with your association with
some very bad influences on this newsgroup.. namely..
Bjay, Louie and Redshad .. just to name three of the
    leading offenders..

This offensive behavior has to stop before severe mea-
    sures are necessary..

We can discuss all this more fully as we monitor the rear
stations on the next ride.. Thank you for your support..
