For the last 10 years I've been in a line of work that I love with a
    passion.

The main goal of that work should've been "to make people happy" but
unfortunately the company that I worked for up until a month ago
ignored that, and went for the money making option at the expense of
    quality of life.

I now work for a company that seems to have it's priorities right in
the line of work that it carries out.

I like my new job :)

You've obviously not worked in an environment where this rings true,
    then?

I've worked for a lot of retailers, and in terms of valuing and fair
treatment of employees, you have to go a long way to beat my current
    lot.

    Charmed, I'm sure.

You're with Associated Dairies as was, yes? [1]

If you bought 100 shares, @ $16.50 when Walmart floated, in 1970,
you'd currently own 204,800 shares, at today's closing price of $60.

    Or you'd have turned $1,650 into $12,288,000.

Definitely not run for the shareholders, is it?

    And who owns the shares?

38.5% of share capital is owned by 5 members of the Walton family.

Or 1.7 *billion* shares. At sixty dollars a pop.[3]

Just so you know *who* you're working for.

I bet *they* could afford a weekend in France.

Hell, I bet they could afford France.
The above is why your pay scale is lower, and vice versa.

[1] If not, this is gonna fall a bit flat.[2]
    [2] But the principle remains. <clutches straw>
[3] That's over ONE HUNDRED BILLION dollars. Five people.

You want to believe because the alternative is that they really don't
give a shit about their staff and who wants to work for a firm which

    Baugur Group hf 75,941,564 22.13%
    Fidelity International Ltd 45,511,352 13.26%
    Legal & General 11,079,041 3.22%

You'll do well to see it on the balance sheet, btw.

    "Baugur Group

Baugur Group is an international investment company focusing on
retailing investments and real estate operations in northern Europe.

Among the principal foreign assets owned by the company are the
fashion chain Oasis, the world famous toy company Hamleys and the
health products chain Julian Graves. Baugur Group obtained majority
interest in all three companies during 2003.

In addition, the company has interests in several companies listed in
London, including a 22% share in Big Food Group PLC, as well as shares
in the House of Fraser PLC and Somerfield PLC. Baugur has also
invested in the British real estate development company LXB Properties
    ltd.

In Iceland Baugur Group owns a large share in Hagar, the largest food
and specialty goods retailer in Iceland. Other domestic investments
include holdings in the real estate company Stodir, the DIY retailer
Húsasmiðjan, and media company Northern Lights.

President & CEO of Baugur Group is Jon Asgeir Johannesson and Hreinn
Loftsson is Chairman of the Board of Directors."

    Well I never.

If you honestly believe that those three shareholders give a monkey's
chuff about the happiness of shop workers, then I'll have a pint of
    what you've been drinking.

  14. I am a bit of a piss head at times and so's SWMBO but I doubt we got
anywhere near £100 on booze - I doubt I could face the trip back to
    the ferry otherwise.
<G> What on's the question, I spent maybe £15 a head on snacks drinks
for the daytime. Only by factoring in Kate stocking up on cigarettes
    would it get to £50.

  16. I've just paid a smallish legal bill (£300), which should potentially
save my kids around £100K in tax when I fall off my perch. I
personally won't see a benefit but I'd call that a bargain. The person
who did the work for me normally charges £200 ph, I however, know that
doesn't solely go to them, there are other staff to support.

When I was an EKS going for a rate rise I charged what I thought I
could get away, with taking into account my skill set and the
availability of others with similar skills.

is relatively new so buying this years model means it's a toy.
