Admittedly, the company don't pay what I'd consider to be a going rate
for the work they put in, however, I know this, and fight it to the best
of my abilities, as do most of my collegues.

Eh? Shareholder's dividends are 'extortionate'? I must have missed your
    point.

Unfortunately I've only ever really dabbled with 'growth' stocks; that
tend to lose money faster than utilities and still fail to pay a
reasonable dividend. Oh, that and private pensions that take money
transferred in from company pensions (companies I've left) and do a
magic trick... *pouff* pension *almost* disappeared! Hurrah! thank
    heavens for the FSA.

    Previously on usenet, 'Hog said...
I never liked credit or finance anyway. I wasn't bankrupted because of
anything like credit cards or loans, in fact they were totally under
control and I owed maybe 350 quid out of a total of 15,000 available. I
was hit by the VAT man, Inland Revenue and Halifax BS.

My outlook didn't need to change, I didn't borrow for luxuries[1] before
I was bankrupted. When I set up my own business I used my own savings to
buy a 2 year old van and all the specialist tools needed. I postponed
buying my Firestorm by 6 months by doing that, I still bought it though.

What it does mean is that for the past 3 years I couldn't have borrowed
even if I'd wanted to, but I still managed to buy the ZZRs, GPZ etc
through buying/selling, saving and careful budgetting. Next on the list
is a ZX of some variety, and I'll save for that too even though I won't
be bankrupt when it comes to buying it.

[1] My bike is a luxury, even when it's all I have to use.

Taking this logic forward - I'm happy sitting on my arse watching
Television, so where do I sign for this decent wage?

Work isn't about happiness, it's about being paid to provide a service,
    or a skill.

You've spent too long being brainwashed by the corporate machine.

You know, it really is possible to both enjoy your work and provide a
service / skill. Obviously, this is something that is lost in the 'Big
    Blue'.

Unfortunately, people seem to have lost sight of the fact that work
_can_ be a fun and friendly place to be as they chase forever bigger
    goals.

Nope, I knew this long before I worked for a corporate, I knew this when
I worked for a small family owned business..

    It's very simple - here's how a business works.

1 - The money that comes in *has to* be greater than the money that goes
    out.

2 - If you keep the costs as low as possible it means there's more room
to manouvre if times get hard.

And that's what work is, making sure the money comes in either directly
by earning it for the company providing a service or making a product,
or indirectly by ensuring things happen efficiently so the costs stay
    low.
See above. I'm not saying it's not possible to enjoy your job - most of
the time I enjoy what I do. What I am saying is that the primary
purpose of a business is not "to make people happy", it's to make money.

I work for a company who has several mission statements, one of which
    is:

'a great place to work and shop'

The happiness of employees is equally important as making money -
they've realised that you can't consistently deliver one without the
    other.

Why did you use unhappy, underpaid supermarket staff as an example then?
Obviously it can't be true if your employer has.... A Mission
    Statement!!

ITYM "sole purpose" - other wise you're underutilising your capital.
The mission statement is determined by the board, not the
shareholders. If the business doesn't make money, shareholder capital
    goes somewhere else.

    Ah... yes.

The shares I've lost on; hey it's my greed and if you can't afford to
    lose you shouldn't gamble. The pension... by Ged that makes me angry;
thought I was doing the right thing, saving for a pension when I had
next to no disposable income. And then to get shafted by financial
mismanagement and failings in the oversight of the pensions. *sigh*

Thing is that most of the people who work for me are happy and enjoy
what they do. The won't leave even though they could earn more money
doing essentially the same job elsewhere.

Of course, there's scope to pay people a better wage, and I try to do
this wherever possible, I'll fight the corporate machine in any way I
can, but, ultimately, it's a fruitless battle unless I get everyone on
    my side.

Shareholders are bloodsucking scum, and I'm happy to work for a company
that doesn't bow to shareholder demands.

The company aim is to keep both employees _and_ shareholders happy. So
much so that we have a very good reputation in our sector and lots of
people wanting to work for us, even though our pay scale is lower than
    many of of our competitiors.
