Now I'm solo for the French run, I wondered if I could manage with
just a tank bag. And, you know, I think I can. Pair of shoes, trews,
change of Ts and bills, washbag, waterproofs, and that's it.

    I must be forgetting something...

Passport, mobile phone, money/credit card, reference for breakdown policy
    and perhaps travel insurance, EHIC.

I thought that until i smashed my leg up in Barbados, fucking glad I had
it I was I can tell you. It was looking like a private flight home at
one point, can't imagine that being overly cheap...

I'm forever leaving my mobile in the charger.
I would tend to agree. However, I tend to weigh these things up with:
could not having travel insurance bankrupt me -- and decide on that
    basis.

My bank account comes with travel insurance included.

I will confess to just having stumped up for a year's multi-trip
European breakdown cover though. Next stop, pipe & slippers.

i gave up on having travel insurance when i started taking my motorhome
round europe for between 6 to 9 months at a time a few years ago, had it
first year, but the fuckers mis-sold it, said it was 6 months cover, turned
out to be 45 days at time, for a max of 6 months worth in a year or sommat
    daft like that,
got me dosh back but was fucked as cant buy travel insurance when away from
    home country apparantly.

figured the EHIC would cover me for most things, and owt it didnt, well, get
me to switzerland and have me put down,
bury me there too so the family can have a nice holiday when they come to
    put flowers on me grave.

Oh yes, I am prepared to be wrong in my assumption. The simple answer is
    that I don't know authoritatively.

I suppose, in theory, a serious mishap could set you up for a bill of
many thousands, even with EHIC, but it's a pretty small chance so I
    don't really bother.

What is this 'packing' of which you speak ?

Since my soft panniers are now charred offerings after Chimay [1]
looks like i'll be bungeeing a rucksac on.

With yours and Bonners bungees, natch ;)

doubt you'd be bankrupted at all, I got a bill for about £50 after my
episode in France - the EH1C covered a fair amount of the cost, then
they billed me for the difference.
