Obliged - here's the gist I was looking for:

"a 'sporting' run - "We ride hard, we ride fast; we cruise at a
minimum of 200kph and stop every hour, only for fuel; we're
deep in enemy territory, so if anyone goes down, you're on your own -
let's hope they honour the Geneva Convention" :->

Although I also like his idea of :
"In future I'm gonna be sweeper, and Vicky is going to walk down the
line of bikes[2] with a "Wet Race" blackboard, before getting on the
back of my bike and dropping a red flag."

Seems to be a bit of a recurring attitude in France. The local plod
weren't interested in me making a report when my wallet was pinched, which
meant I couldn't claim for the stolen money on my insurance.

Eh? Dunno if it's common, but I've still got a zero pounds per month
contract with Orange UK. I _very_ rarely use it, but it's useful to
    have as a back-up, like.

How strange. I have always taken statements such as the one you mention

We were halfway between Newcastle and Maidenhead when Clare remembered
that she hadn't packed any trousers, apart from the leather bike
    trousers that she was wearing.

We had to make an impromptu stop at one of the shopping centres on the M25.

Go Direct Debit with your PAYG. No more topping up, you'll never run
    out of credit. Simple.

Yes, but if you are abroad, lets just say in France, and you need to
make a few phone calls due to 'emergencies' and your mobile runs out of
charge even though you may have a few squids of credit left..

Sorry, I don't quite follow. I was simply suggesting that even for low
usage PAYG may not be the best option, as it's possible to get a
normal contract for £zero/month plus (inflated rate, sure) calls.

If your phone has run out of charge you're fucked whatever payment
    option you choose, no?
