French Run Autumn 2005 details

  1. September 9 and 10

OK, we're going a bit further afield this time.

The venue looks like being Beaune - a fair old run. This is because this
will be the last sun of summer, and it should be warm, and the hotel has
    an open-air swimming pool.

And we can visit the Burgundy wine cellars.

I did toy with making this a two-hotel trip - one out, one back - but
there are few hotels with open-air swimming pools in Northern France....

So it may mean earlier boats than usual, like about 8-9am, and a good
day's thrash. But once there, chill out, swim before dinner, Saturday
swim some more, generally chill out, and then hammer back.

Costs will be about the usual, and I'm working on a five-course menu
    deal.

    More details as and when.

This has gone out as an email to those who have said they're up for it.
Anyone else - email me and watch for the spamtrap.

  3. Yup. I thought of putting the Friday night hotel half-way between the
two, and making Beaune Saturday night only. Might still do.

  4. 380 miles from Calias, 340 miles from Caen. It will be a bit of a run.
Shame it's only two days away for that distance.

Is this going out early in the morning on the 9th from Dover (or
Portsmouth?) zooming down to Beaune, staying overnight and zooming
back to Dover on the way home on the 10th?

For some reason I've been aiming to clear 8th-11th Sep on my diary. I
take it the dates are still provisional at this point.

  6. Its approx 250 miles for us to get to Calais, 150 to Portsmouth. If you
add the 400 on the other side that makes it 650 miles in a day. That's a
long way for my pillion [1] I think YTC and others have to do
    over 300 miles before Calais.

[1] Without having done any long journeys for a while.

If it's an early departure from Dover then I'd suggest either staying
the the Chaucer Hotel, Canterbury or the Abbotts Barton Hotel,
Canterbury or taking over the Imperial Hotel in Hythe for the night.
One can easily get to Dover on either the M20/A20 from Hythe or on the
A2 from Canterbury. Unless the tour is going from Portsmouth to Le
Havre, in which case I've no idea.

  8. No problems one up. But I will have the missus on the back for this one.
Plus it's 250 miles down to Dover. About 650 miles in a day. It will be a
    long day.

Britains first choice of sports-tourer not up to doing 350 miles in a
day? I'd buy a new bike if I were you.

I used to do that on a ZZR1100 every other Friday night when I was
seeing Beelzebub. On the Sunday evening I'd do the same mileage riding
home. Even now I go for a 300 mile round trip on my own just for a
ride-out on the Gixer on some weekends.

Which part of 380 miles from Calais did you have a problem
    comprehending?

Bad form, but there's also the small matter of the drag to a UK port.

  12. Yeah.... Unfortunately, if you live that far from the Channel ports,
that's life. I *could* make it a three-dayer (Thursday, friday, Saturday
    nights) but that's getting pricey.

  13. Nah. Friday is the 9th, right? So it's out Friday morning, probably
early, get there Friday evening, and come back *Sunday*. So two nights,
    as ever.

I understand that you're too wuss to ride that far in one day. It's a
    breeze on a VFR.

Might be a breeze for me, but it's not for the pillion.

    But you wouldn't understand that.

    HTH.

I don't mind the distance, but it's 3 tank fills to get there. :-(

    Thinks of Sunday <fx: shudder>

Perhaps you could start off half way.
