What can I use to free a small piston whose steel rings have rusted to
the sides of an aluminum head?

I have applied a penetrant like WD40 and will repeat for several days.
I plan to use a propane torch to expand the walls a bit to try and
    break it free.

Has someone had success with a similar problem?

Diesell fuel, or automatic transmission fluid are both pretty good at
wicking into a frozen cylinder. Soak for a day or 2 then gentle
tapping on top of piston with a block of soft wood and a hammer.

ATF sounds like a good idea. I finally freed the piston, using Rick's
suggestion of a PVC pipe as a rammer.

My thanks to Brian and Rick for the input.
