Colleague just asked me to go skiing with 32 kids to Switzerland for 8 days.

Great, they are with ski instructors all day so I get to ski for free. Costs
me nothing, I get free transport there, free ski passes, free rental, free
food and even petty cash for drinks etc.

    Yay.

You missed the best bit: interfering with kids! Woohoo!

  3. Nice. And you will be turned out of bed at 2am to get them out of
prison, out of bars where they've puked up, join rescue parties because
they've buggered off on their own... You'll have to deal with the irate
hotelier whose rooms they've trashed. Shops they've nicked stuff from...

Yes, I've been a kid on a ski trip, too.

Austria, early 1973. Flew back from Munich. This was only a few months
after the 1972 Olympics massacre, of course. Heavily armed police
    *everywhere*.

Our flight was delayed. There were dozens of Brit kids roaming the
airport, bored. Little Bruvver and I found the coppers' rest room,
empty. Hanging on a peg inside was one of their peaked caps. Brilliant.
A quick pincer movement swoop, and we had it. All green and gold and
peaked - I tell you, the Krauts *really* know how to make uniforms look
    good.

So we stuffed it inside our bag, and lo and behold, our flight was
called at last, and before boarding they wre checking *all* hand
    luggage.

We were fucked. The coppers were *not* going to be happy when they found
one of their colleagues' caps in our bag. Coincidentally, at exactly the
same time, we saw a hat-less copper wandering around, looking under
    tables and chairs. Oops.

Just as my insides were dissolving, the coppers looked at this line of
kids, decided we were no threat to anyone, and gave the signal to stop
searching bags and let us all board. Thank you, Jesus.

As soon as the plane had taken off and the undercarriage was thumping
into the wheel wells, out came the trophies from all us kids.

Ashtrays and towels from the hotel, yeah.

The flag from the petrol station opposite the hotel, yeah.....

And then we produced The Cap. The tour leader went absolutely white.
"Where did you get that from?" she whispered. We told her. She went even
    whiter, like Michael Jackson.

Herr Worbs (your name was on a tag inside the cap, and I've never
forgotten it) - I'm really, really sorry, OK?

Maybe I should point out that I work for a private school so they are nice
kids (Really, and the ones that get allowed on trips like this are angels).
    A nighhtmare scenario in itself
    PMSL

I used to work for a "difficult" inner city comprehensive and they didn't
have a single trip in the whole year I was there. No suprise really.

I can't even put into words the difference between the two establishments,
but I agree that there are exceptions to the rule.

To give you an idea of why our kids behave we permanently expelled two boys
(6th form) last year for long hair (Touching shoulders).

I was about to say, having been to a private school myself, that pupils
at private schools are quite often *worse* than their comprehensive
    counterparts.

    old-fashioned in the 70s ffs.

That was my experience too. The security of daddy's cheque book to
underwrite any irresponsibility tends to boost bravado.

Yeah. I mean, they even frown upon the staff buggering the prettier boys
    in most schools these days.

You stay where you are Zan.

  13. Whaa-aat? In my day, it was off-the-shoulders and if it touched, you
were just ordered to get it cut.

Parents will have coughed up at least 35k to a school by the time that
their child reaches the sixth form. Do you really believe that at this
point the school would expel a child simply because they hadn't had
    their hair cut?

Sounds like utter bullshit to me. Possibly it was an excuse to get the
    kids out.

  15. Only if they attend a cheapo pikey school. For the better public
schools, that'll be nearer 100k, and that's only for public school age
kids and doesn't take account of prep school fees.
    I agree.

It was in the paper, and not all the staff agreed with the decision but it
was made clear that certain standards had to be upheld. They should have
just gone to the barbers but they decided to be militant towards the system.

Shame really throwing their A-levels away just out of principle.

  17. So they were thrown out for deliberately bucking school rules and
refusing to conform to the school system, which is a rather different
thing from just growing their hair long.

Well, quite hence my use of 'at least'.

But we're talking about a school that would employ what-his-name so I
don't think we're talking about somewhere at the top of the pile.
