O.K., I've spent a little time googling and the only references to top
speed I've been able to find are along the lines of "Every SS100 will
be despatched with a written guarantee, signed by the Maker, that the
Machine has actually been timed over 100 m.p.h.for a quarter of a
mile. A Private Road has been very kindly offered to the Manufacturer
for the purpose of this guarantee."

So, under what circumstances could an SS100 go at more the 160mph -
assuming the engine could reliably make the order of 120bhp?

Ah, now that I've re-read the page rather than just scanning it, "The
    Fastest British-made Motor Cycle ever Built: 169.8 m.p.h. - Gyon -
    April, 1937 (Official F.I.C.M.)"

    Fair enough.

  15. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the

"This Brough is now in the Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham."

    Not any more, it's not.

That's the pisser about the NMM fire - a lot of machines like that with
    family history were lost.

That's amazing, having seen a fair few bits of 1920s and 1930s
    technology up close[1].
