Free (ish) to a good home

It is with great sadness that I offer my trusty Honda CB250RS rat-bike
to one of you lovely people. You could never call it a nice bike, but
it's been a good bike. It is free(ish). All I ask is that a 20 quid
donation be made to Riders For Health. That's what I gave for it when
WavyDavy entrusted me with ownership, and I think it fitting that the
bike stays within this group and that 20 quid to R-F-H be the going rate
for it whenever it changes hands. I haven't used it in ages and I'm not
likely to again because my GPZ500 will soon be on the road.

There are about 190,000 miles on it now, but the last 30,000 have been
on the replacement engine I fitted a while back. This engine has a crack
in the upper crankcase that has been bodge filled with Quiksteel, but it
still leaks oil so an eye must be kept on the oil level at frequent
intervals. There are a spare set of crankcases and some other engine
spares including a good cylinder head and cam. At present there is no
MOT or tax and it's sorned, but I should think that with minimal work an
MOT would be acheivable. The exhaust is a Motad that has been patched up
more times than my Dennis the Menace slippers. Don't even ask when it
was last serviced, because it hasn't been in the 50,000ish miles I've
done on it. Oil is changed on a total loss sytem. As it has an oil leak,
when it stops dripping it needs more throwing in.

Nowadays the colour is black, courtesy of a roll of duct tape and some
hastily applied black aerosol paint. Tyres are in excellent condition,
but are Cheng Shins. A rack is fitted, and a black top box goes with it,
but not the one it's been wearing whilst I've had it. Top box needs a
new lock, but they are available for about 2 quid from hardware stores.
The tacho doesn't work because the cable snapped 3 years ago. The speedo
doesn't work because the cable snapped 2 years ago, but I fitted a Sigma
BC800, so there's 20 quid's worth of goodies. The clock set is only
still fitted because the neutral light still works, the high beam idiot
light packed up 3 years ago and the indicators you can see flashing from
the riders seat, so no need to look at the clocks for that idiot light.
The whole bike has been kept on the road for the last 3 years on the
tightest of budgets, and if it was in my garage and fited thenm it got
used, hence the 350YPVS rear flashers, Suzuki GS fronts etc. The frame
needs either welding or replacing because the footrest mount on the left
has rusted away. A couple of spare frames, one of which is a good one
that just needs painting, go with it

It goes, in a manner of speaking. It stops, eventually. It goes round
corners, scarily. Engine is tired and a bit noisy, brakes are pathetic
because the pads in there have been in for all the miles I've done and
have not worn at all and the handling is an acquired taste. I can grind
the pegs, but then again I have had a few blows to my head.

To help keep this marvel of Japanese ingenuity and jewel-like
engineering on the road, the old girl comes complete with a shitload of
spares. Basically there are almost enough parts to build another bike if
you fancy throwing good money after bad. They include the remains of the
blown up engine, which should yield a good gearbox, crankcases, clutch
and cylinder head/cam. Loads of wheels, forks, mudguards, seats, wiring
loom, reg/recs, ignition box and a variety of other bits and shit.

You'll need a van or trailer/large booted vehicle to remove it and all
the spares from our place in mid-Bedfordshire.

    It can be seen here:

Don't be fooled, that picture makes it look a fucking sight nicer than
it really is. It's a shed, but it's a cheap working shed.

Email me at the address in the header for more details.

I passed my test on one of those back in 1980. It might have been that one.
Bugger to start even when new.

I couldn't completely kill it. Timo would be the acid test.

The problem will come when Timo tries to improve it then - as they say -
it's Good Night Vienna, Miss Jones.

I did briefly entertain the idea of restoring it back to its former
glory, but there wasn't any former glory in being a CB250RS, so I
    quickly forgot about that.

Maybe if you gave Timo a totally fucked bike random parts would
    mysteriously start working again...

  8. Loz,

Would it be ok to put another couple of piccies of your bike up onto
this thread. One's a bit blurry and the other is a picture of the
clocks. Both were taken at the ratbike review but with a phone camera.
