After deciding to finally go the Gortex route, once I had sampled the
cheaper HG own brand stuff, I failed to get any discount [1][2][3]. So I
opted for a free heated vest.

Maybe I should sign uo for the Dragon Rally ?

[1] They would only come down in price on the the day glow red jackets
    that no one wanted.
[2] I've never spent so much on bike clothes in one hit
[3] Bad time of year to buy winter gear.

They had those discounted at the Cardiff store. Hideous.

I managed a 10% discount on a sensible grey colour Cruise II, but didn't
get a heated vest as that offer came in the following weekend.

The jacket has been very good in the rain over the last few weeks. The back
protector is a very good insulator and may have to be removed for
comfortable summer use. The only problem is the top of the zip - it's very
rigid and needs a bit of fiddling with as it sometimes stabs me in my
    short, fat neck.

I've only ever paid full retail price for HG kit and it's worth every
    penny IMHO.

I'm still wearing daily through the winter the "all season" trousers I
bought 7 years ago. They need replacing this year but will wait until
spring to do so. I've had 2 "all season" jackets in that time, but the
jacket does get worn every day, summer or winter. My only niggle with
this latest jacket design is the velcro fastening collar with no stud
closure. It's getting on a bit and unless th velcro catches properly,
with my fat neck, it comes undone readily, but other than that, the
kit's hardy, *very* waterproof and does me in all temperatures (+30deg
to -10deg). It also doubles as good skiing kit, although the zips on the
bottom of the trousers don't do up all the way over my ski boots.

    Cardiff, yes, I agree
Aye, thats the one I got. (but less the discount :-( )
I might get a battery pack and use it for walking :)
When I tried it on, I was surprised at
    a) How light it all felt
    b) I didn't notice the protectors anywhere.

Heated jackets or vests are great. You can keep warm with a lighter
jacket on and if you get too hot you just turn the heated kit off (or
wind the temp down if you've got a controller) then if it starts to
get chilly turn it back on again.

I've got a 200 mile round trip to do on Monday and Tuesday next week
and the heated jacket will certainly be coming out to play. I've
thrown a set of bar muffs on the Tenere and they make a difference by
not only keeping my hands warmer but a couple of days last week it
pissed down and I didn't have to suffer with sopping wet gloves on the
    ride home.
Why not sign up for the Elefant rather than settle for a pale
imitation? You could even do both if you were into full on masochism
but if I could only find the time to do one it'd be the Elefant.

You'll be away for about a week if you do a full three days at the
rally and it's one of the best biking events you can go to. It looks
as if some of the usual suspects will be going again next year so
you'd have plenty of people to laugh at.

I found a set of bar muffs that will fit the GS without removing the hand
guards. They have been excellent. Keeping my hands warm is the priority but
as you say, having a dry pair of gloves to put on for the return journey is
    a bonus.

I need to 'adjust' mine a bit more because the r/h one fits a lot
better than the l/h one but that might just be a case of putting some
kind of packing around the bars to replicate the brake master
cylinder. At under £30 a pair they're well worth the money.

There are smaller, cheaper ones if you don't need the massive ones designed
for ADV bikes. http://www.tucanourbano.it/main/termoscud.aspx is the
    Italian maker's website.

I bought the gaucho too, which is fab
