Frankfurt Route?

    I've been giving some thought to a possible Frankfurt route.

    I've been hampered by a few details, none of the three European atlases I
    have consistently agree on route numbers. Although two are a bit elderly
    [1], the third is crap.

    It doesn't help as my route planning tends to err toward the airily wave
    my hand in the general direction of where I /think/ I want to go, school
    of thought.

    Avoiding massive motorway use and relying on what look like good (UK) A
    roads [2]. Average speeds should be high enough to get the lot done in
    11 hours, including fuel stops.

    Thoughts from those who know these things?


    [1] One map sees fit to distinguish between the Bundesrepublik and
    Demokratische Republik the other, gives the AA telephone number as
    WHItehall 1200.

    [2] I really don't want to be bored shitless on a motorway. There's
    also the thought of elderly small capacity bikes blowing up, or bits
    falling off, with continuous WOT action. Especially as 60 mph on 'big
    mopeds' may be unnecessarily exciting on an autobahn.

    The section around Trier is very nice and I'd recommend it as a base for
    a tour of the Eiffel mountains. However, the road SE towards
    Kaiserlautern does not lend itself to rapid progress.

    I suggest you continue south on the N43 towards Metz (use the free
    autoroute to get around Sedan). Then turn east on the N3, N62 to German
    border. Cross the Rhine near Baden Baden. From here I'd be hooking up
    with the Autobahn all the way to Munich. Definitely to Stuttgart. From
    Stuttgart you can take the B29 east, then turn south to Augsburg on the
    B25 & B2 which will take you into Munich.

    Go to www.viamichelin.com and play with the preferences.

    11 hours is optimistic without using motorways as the French do not tend
    to have bypasses around most of the towns and the Germans make
    travelling west-east difficult unless you use the Autobahn.

    The result needs to be able to be written on a strip of 6"x2" masking
    tape.

    Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, sweller
    Can't you just wave a plate of Sauerkruat in front of your bike and say
    "Home girl!"[1]?

    That'd get you most of the way, then just turn right a bit. Getting home
    will be by the Haynes BoL method.

  6. Fond of big industrial conurbations? I was thinking of getting clear of
    Calais and putting down a few miles quickly by hitting the A26 down to Jn4,
    then D341 down to Arras, D939 to Cambrai.
    Nip round Sedan on the autoroute, then N43 as far as Carignan, turn left and
    up the D981 to Florenville, N83 to Aarlen, N4 into Luxembourg - hopefully in
    time for lunch. I make the distance for Calais-Luxembourg to be c.260
    miles, so prolly not much more than 6 hours riding time.
    I was thinking about crossing the Rhine on the car ferry at Bingen.

    Handy hint: 'A' roads in Germany are Motorways (as in 'Autobahn'),
    what you want are either 'B' or 'L', which would correspond to 'A' or
    'B' roads in the UK, but a bit wider and with fewer potholes.

    You got further than me planning a route. I've not got beyond France,
    Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany stage yet. I'm thinking about doing a Platty
    and getting over to Calais on the Friday night and get a nice early start
    in the morning.

    Breakfast in France, lunch in Luxembourg and dinner in Frankfurt that's my
    plan.
    I was only planning on using motorways to get round cities and such like.
    The little RS starts to feel a bit strained much above 60 so I'm sort of
    setting that as my cruising speed, and the thing only does about 120 miles
    per tank.

    P.S what's German for "my bike has blown up, is there a skip nearby"

    Good SWK, how much motorway on the first leg?
    Good plan. 40 mph would be a reasonable average speed to work on.

    Although fuel stops may be interesting. 10 or so bikes all filling up at
    the same time, their riders all going for a slash, smoke, cup of tea and
    minor repairs as well. Probably take longer than the normal 10 minutes.
    I assume this is a turn up and go thing? Any ideas how much and times?
    I've googled but not very well it would seem.

    I tend to be the fuel and map check type - down to Gehenna and all that.
    And the *last* thing I'll be doing is swilling tea or coffee.

    I think it runs up until midnight. Can't find any info about the fares, but
    I don't think they're second mortgage territory.
