Frame paint removal

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Biker2 \(Threadstopper\), Jan 7, 2005.

  1. A friend has a bike frame that he wants to get nickel plated and the platers
have asked him to remove all of the paintwork first.

Because the plating will show up every blemish in the metal frame, the paint
will have to be removed by chemicals as anything abrasive will spoil the
    mirror finish that is required.

Do any UKRMers know how the paint can be easily removed or a company who
    could do the job ?

Try one of those firms that strip pine doors. As long as the paint on the
frame is not epoxy-based, the chemicals _should_ remove it.

Sand blasting - look in the Yellow Pages. If there isn't one listed
Powder Coaters/Stove Enamellers will know of one locally or may do it
    themselves.

There's a good one in Olive Road, Hove.

I think your mate's going to get a very nasty shock when all the paint's
    off.

"Mirror finish" is not the way I'd describe any naked frame I've ever
    seen.

He's likely in for a lot of grinding and polishing before it'll be good
    enough to be plated.

  7. I think that sand blasting has been ruled out as it doesn't leave a mirror
    finish...
