Was life an option available to the judge?

Causing death by dangerous driving, maximum penalty is 14 years inside
(I thought it was 10, crikey), between 3 and 11 penalty points,
mandatory disqualification for at least two years followed by a
    mandatory extended re-test.

Life isn't an option for any driving offence that I'm aware of, though
if they tack GBH with intent on top (not relevant in this case) or
manslaughter, that'd change things rather dramatically.

At 30mph she'd have hit him with less than half the force imparted at
    45mph.

Not at all, although you are welcome to provide examples. It's just
that, in this case, the HC was highlighting a point of law so Paul's
comment appeared to be a non sequitur.

In my defence, I had been drinking too. ;-)

It wasn't me that advocated a death sentence for the motorist. Ask
    the OP.

Frankly, I'd be asking for a refund. Newton's third law is about as
relevant to deciding who comes off worse as the Peano axioms are to
    petrol pricing.

(Yes, the forces are equal. But as the accelerations which result from
them are related to mass, that really makes ****-all difference to anything)

Is this a troll or just an atypically stupid poster from ukrm? Without
previous history it really isn't obvious.

Bollocks, we all share the same responsibility as any other road user.
It's time to bring in tests and compulsory insurance for cycles.

Google will supply the answer. Hog is somewhat to the right of
thatcher on his most liberal days.

Last I heard he was trying to expose Atilla the Hun as a left wing
    tree-hugger who was misunderstood.

  13. Tests, I dunno. I suppose so. Compulsory insurance, definitely. You're a
road user, you have a duty of care to other road users, you get insured.

"In Germany and the Netherlands, the onus is more on the motorist. Not
stopping for pedestrians on crossings is an offence and a driver can be
issued with a ticket even if they are waiting on the kerb (again, the
expectation is that pedestrians should cross safely)"

It's not just an expectation, I've been fined twice in Germany for crossing
on a red light. Only 5DM (it still had some value mind), but it was a good
deterrent. I completely deserved the second fine as the cops were on the
opposite side the road waiting for the light to turn green so they could
cross. I was too focused on making sure no cars were approaching.

  15. Mind you, it's not like juries are half-full of fuckwits, is it? I
merely throw that in as an observation.

Your sentence fragment could be parsed in two ways:

"There's far too many selfish people who" are like cyclists

is one attempt at an interpretation. A competent user of English would
also note that I introduced my response with the words "You appear to
be", thus making it clear that I was doubtful as to your intended
    meaning.

Please don't get stroppy when your failure to write using such
complicated grammatical devices as verbs and subjects leads to
ambiguity. It only serves to make you appear foolish.

I assume you ride a motorbike.

Have you completed CBT? If so, you will appreciate quite how foolish
    your comment was.
