Oh no. He put his life in danger by going through a red light. She put
other peoples' lives in danger by not paying proper attention.

I'd say risking your own life rather than someone else's was the more
    stupid action.

BTDTGTTS. Cyclist pulls out from side road without looking, I'm over
the speed limit and despite seeing him and taking evasive action am
unable to avoid him. 18 months.

I'm not sure it's "right", but this driver was clearly being more
irresponsible than was I, and the max penalty has doubled since then,
so I'd say it's entirely consistent.

Are cyclists in the UK obliged to be aware of the HC?
Are cyclists in the UK even required to be able to read?

You'll have to teach them to read first.

Something has obviously changed. In my day you had to have a Tufty Club
    badge.

Cyclists tend to keep to the far left in order to allow faster traffic to
pass them, were they not to do so and instead ride down the near middle
of lanes with queues of traffic possibly building up behind them, as they
are perfectly entitled to do, road rage incidents would soar, cyclists
would be mown down or assaulted by mentally deficient motorists.

It would I am sure have been an entirely different spin on it from you had
it been yourself either on a motorbike or pushbike in this situation.
Opening a door in the path of someone on a bike does not differ in my
opinion from striking them with a piece of timber from the pavement or
lobbing lumps of concrete at them, the only difference is the
absence of malicious intent. Accidents do happen, humans are fallible,
except it seems when in or around motor vehicles.

You should have given some indication when relating this incident that you
were only interested in replies which agreed with your rather odd take on
the matter and all this grief could have been avoided.

They do? I wouldn't make any wild changes of direction in a car for a
    cyclist jumping the lights.
I made a "slight" adjustment for one a few months ago on the Ducati
(posted here) as I was mid lane. No way I'm swerving into another lane.
I caught the **** with the offside pannier anyway.

Utterly utterly despicable. There is no justification IMHO.
How much over the limit though?

I had this on a bike vs pedestrian around 1987. The Pedo lost. Sure I
was probably doing over 30 though it was dual carriageway. The beak had
no hesitation it deciding the other party owed me a duty of care by
looking before he ran out right in front of me.

Nonsense. It is perfectly legal for pedestrians to cross when the lights
    are against them.
