Surely both problems could have been avoided by the simple expedient of
wearing a nice pair of woolly socks under the sandals?

Oh, I agree, but the pain outweighs the hassle of taking extra
    footwear, IWHT.
In 1993 I went to Florida for a holiday to include Daytona Bike Week
and rented a Harley Sportster for a few days.
The day I picked it up I rode pretty much all day in glorious sunshine,
wearing an open face helmet & sunglasses.
I never thought about applying sun cream, so imagine my horror, on
looking at myself in the mirror later, prior to a night out trying to
pull some Spring Break girls, I had a very sunburnt face with white
stripes down the sides of my cheeks where the strap had gone.

well, on that particular holiday, I only had two pairs of "shoes" - my
Sidis and the aforementioned sandals. Sandals pack away fairly neatly.
    heh.

There are *so* many problems with that solution I don't know where to
    start.

I normally put the frame on the bike rack and the wheels in the boot.

Forgot to put the wheels in the boot.

Wasn't happy but luckily I've always managed to borrow some. I've
done it twice, first up at Cannock and the guys in the bike shop there
    lent me some wheels.

Second time was at a race back in the day and I managed to borrow some
    then as well.
