    Message follows...

My friend Iain, who I'm snowboarding with in California - well, his
wife Carol is currently in Sri Lanka. It was complete coincidence that
she was booked to fly out for a short holiday on boxing day, the day
after the disaster. Because she knows the place really well, and
because she's the sort of woman to roll her sleeves up and get
involved, she's been trying to help the local relief effort, and has
enlisted Iain (see below) and me to help raise some money.

Do you think you could put something up on UKRM containing the gist of
this information? If anyone wants to pledge anything, they should
    email .

    Begin forwarded message:

    From: Iain Duncumb <>

I'm trying to raise money for a relief effort in Sri Lanka. My wife is
out there on holiday - as it happened she travelled out the day after
the tidal wave disaster. There is real problem with relief getting
through to the affected areas and my wife is organising for a
truckload of supplies to be driven from Columbo where she is, to the
affected south and east coast. Her target is to raise 10,000 pounds by
the end of 31st Dec - so far she has 5,500. The truck will leave
    Columbo on 1st Jan.

If you would like to contribute, please respond to this email within
24 hours, i.e. by midnight on Fri 31st Dec (UK time), pledging an
    amount.

    End messages.

  2. So lets get this straight.
Westerners are in Colombo raising money from other westerners to buy
stuff from Sri Lankan merchants to send to other, less fortunate Sri
    Lankans?

Not that I'm against the humanitarian aid to those affected by the
Tsunami. But knowing the sub continental merchants way of doing
business, they won't be offering any discounts, quite the reverse.

  3. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the

  4. Indeed.
There is always somebody ready to profit hugely from someone elses
misfortune. Especially if the unfortunate ones are from a different
    tribe.

Did you get woken up at 2am with the original then 3am with the 'read
your email, it's not spam' then at 3.05am with 'crikey I didn't wake
    you up did I?'

I don't think he's got the hang of this time zone lark.

Sure I have. Sorry, but I didn't realise you slept with your phone
under your pillow. Apologies for anyone I disturbed, I didn't get the
information and request from Carol until 6pm here, which was 8am the
next day in Sri Lanka. If I'd waited until your daytime, it would have
been the middle of the night for me, and by the time I next got up it
would have been earlu afternoon in the UK and early evening in Sri
Lanka. So, I thought it best to bang the text messages out and let
people on UK time deal with them in their morning.

And very grateful I am too. During and extended attack of stupid, I
completely forgot that I could post to ukrm via google groups.

For those interested, Carol raised the necessary money and the trucks
are ready to roll. Thanks to all.

No, but I didn't get much sleep last night. House full of teenage girls.
Laura was considering putting Joe up to demanding to be driven down here.
I thought you were the one who kept weird hours.

Thought it was a bit quiet.
    Pshaw. Call that trouble?
Generally, I don't bother to track such lurid ephemera. Noticing would only
    make them worse.
