Forty lb/ft is a bit more than finger tight, isn't it?

    Bottom yoke pinch bolts.

    All four of them.

    Maybe that's why the steering was a little "vague". =8-O

    Too tight to be sure (I think my FJs are 12Nm), but how would that make
    the steering vague?

    The top yoke bolts are 11Nm, the lowers are 55Nm.

    Of course, I'm only going by the manual, and not on your experiences
    with a completely different bike, but I'll take that chance.
    Forks not secure in bottom yoke would allow them to flex independently
    of each other. A sort of "walking", iyswim. It first came to light as
    a possibility, when I turned the bars, the wheel came in contact with
    the wall - and the bars kept turning.

    Not far, but enough to light a little bulb of inspiration.

    .... and yes, they had been tightened with a torque wrench in the great
    rebuild of 2004.

    Ah right, they were too loose. Going by the subject, I thought you meant
    they were too tight.
