  2. Neve heard of her, but sounds like an impressive lady and an
    impressive life.

I second the motion on the "nice write up" vote. Good one.

Thanks for sharing. Just reading about people like that makes me want to
make more of my life. Inspirational.

At the moment, my obituary would most probably read "Spent too much time
messing with shite old cars and irritating people".

Now get back out there and swear at it before something else breaks."

Indeed. I take it you realise she was TOG's mother?

  7. It was interesting when Gulf War Two kicked off in 2003. I've rarely
    seen her so angry.

He predicted, right from the start, that Iraq would be completely split
between the Shiite and Sunni groups *and* she said that Iran would just
move in and cause trouble. And she said the Yanks would be there "for
    years and years".

If an old lady could have got it so perfectly right, you wonder why Bush
    and Blair didn't.

  8. Because the Yanks aren't Arabists and thought they were back in the age
of gunboat diplomacy and Blair ignored advice from plenty of people.
I predicted Iraq/Afghanistan would be another Vietnam (so did many
    others, of course).

"May you live in interesting times" may be a Chinese curse, but some
people make the best of it. Your mother certainly seems to have done
    so.

  16. I did only when I read the rest of the posts. Still a very impressive
life. Makes me feel I've pissed mine up against the wall.

According to some recent research, it's actually bad for the wider
economy, especially if your economy does consist of more than making and
    flogging AK47s.

Wouldn't it make more sense to feel lucky there wasn't a global war you
had to live through? After all, she was mostly just in the right place,
at the right time, due to horrible circumstances, and mostly only there
because someone told her to go there and in those days you did what you
    were told.

  19. That's a very harsh way of looking at it. Of course I'm glad I didnt
have to deal with WWII. My point was that it sounds like she was a
remarkably strong person who pushed through what shit life threw at
her. Whether I would have the strength to do that I don't know. And am
    glad I didn't have to.

If you want a life inspiation story, read "A fortunate life" by A. B.
    Facey. Far. Fucking. Out.
