[1] The same/similar technique was used by OXO 50 years ago to show
"colour" adverts on a black and white telebox screen.

 

Many, many moons ago I worked at a company that was contracted to do
matrix passenger information displays for railway stations. These
comprised big black boxes that were stuffed with green flourescent
tubes. The front of the boxes had rows of holes that could be covered
with individual shutters to turn the 'pixels' on or off.

During development the cases were sometimes left open, so that the
entire room was illuminated with a fierce green glow.

On leaving the room, for about thirty seconds, the entire world
appeared to be coloured in shades of pink.
