I'll never let that get in the way of the fact that Concorde used the
same engines as a type 32 destroyer.

This is only a game and I can use the facts however I want to.

Andy old bean, I hate to shatter your illusions but the most important
bits on an aeroplane, apart from the hostesses pushing the drinks
trolley are the wings. It is all rather pointless without either of
    them really.

  3. The engines are used as gas generators in most major power stations.

A total boiler / steam generator failure, switch on a single Olympus.

    At do?

That's a bit of an exaggeration but it's true they're used in some
    stations.
    Nearly but not quite again.

The gas turbines run most of the time and waste heat runs the
    steamers.

RR also wanted to use the Trent engine in more power stations but it's
too dirty so it's not considered a good thing.

The above was apparently one of the reasons why RR purchased my old
employer because they made a suitable steam unit to twin up with the
    Trent. Whoops.
    It will now.

  5. More than happy to be updated.

My information comes late 1970s. I did an analysis of the engine control
systems which were at that time Marconi Elliot.
The idea was to be able to test the controllers and the auto start
without taking the engine off line from its back up role.

The thing that stuck in my mind was that some of the power plants even
had re-heat. And in the event of a flame out they would be relit without
the normal pause, to drain down the re-heat pluming.

To any RAF 'sooties' out there this would be a full power wet re-start.
In an aircraft this would result in a hoooge explosion and a megga flame
out the hot end, often with added bits.

Not at all. I'm a selective Luddite.

  9. I'd prefer to think of it as a warship being powered by Concorde
    engines: sounds way cooler.
