Well, I think I finally am on the right track with the carbs. From the
descriptions of Mr. Kritter, it sounded like my bike was running way too
rich, even at 1.5 turns out on the pilot screws. Made me think someone
might have upgraded parts somewhere. So I took a warm up on the bike
and brought it back. Tweeked the carbs, and thought I'd take it back
out to see what kind of response I'd get.

I was so wrapped up in thinking about carbs, it didn't even register my
clutch felt a little mushy. At least, not til I got a quarter mile from
the house and it quit altogether. Helluva time shifting when you have
no clutch. But second gear got me home. Now to figure out what went
wrong there, so maybe I can get back out and finish checking the carbs.

  2. Oh, you can shift a motorbike gear box all day with no clutch, as long
    as you're moving...
Is it a hydraulic clutch, or a cable-operated clutch? Hydraulic
clutches get air in the system and the lever will nove easily, while
the slove cylinder doesn't disengage the clutch at all...

that's pretty much what i had to do to get home......
hydraulic. got home and pulled the cover off the cylinder, which had
fluid in it. seemed a little low, but within specs. once it cools off
later, i'll pull it further apart to check and bleed the system.
