"For Immediate Release"

Discussion in 'Texas Bikers' started by Brian Walker, Nov 14, 2004.

  1. The available pants and jackets from manufacturers like Aerostich, First
Gear, Vanson and others are designed for all weather riding, ventilated,
insulated, water resistant to water proof and full armored for physical
protection in an unplanned get-off. Same thing for boots and gloves,
plus the electrics for cold weather riding make riding a very different
thing from what it was 10 years ago. Why beat yourself up if you don't
have to; the gear is there to help you out and having it on in rugged
conditions makes life much better and lets you ride longer.

The other thing to consider in even cool weather is the effect of wind
chill. A 50 degree ambient temperature reduces to a 28 degree wind
chill at 35 mph. The body reacts to chilling by reducing blood flow to
the periphery of the body, ie, the hands and feet, that are particularly
exposed on motorcycles so the effect is compounded. That alone is
enough to chill you if you are not dressed properly. Throw in being wet
and the complications shoot up dramatically; water increases the
chilling effect by 5 times compared to being dry, so wet clothes on a
motorcycle can be a problem in a hurry. By the time the physical
effects like lack of coordination, restricted movement and actual pain
have shown themselves, it's past time to get off and go warm up. the
best thing is to be equipped properly and not get into that situation in
the first place, but if it happens (and I've been there too), heed what
your body is telling you and go warm up inside and out of the weather.
you will end up being able to ride much further than if you didn't stop.

  2. <>Mark says...in part)~~~~~My conclusion (as I share often in different
forums) is that there's no substitute for good, *riding gear* (as
opposed to street cloths). In the summer, haul potable water for
emergencies. In the winter, layers for emergencies. Weather can change
suddenly when on a trip. It's better to have something and not need it
than need it and not have it. Rain and temp drops are common this time
of year. Living on The Weather Channel several days before leaving for a
_planned_ trip is good advice. It lets you see fronts and weather trends
that may be missing you at home but hitting elsewhere along your route.

of course, you are right above, I imagine every
Biker/poster/respons'ee, in this tx.moto group, is well knowledged in
what you point out above. So, you wanted to point out the seriousness of
what can happen, when one gets TOO cold on a bike ride, and what it
could lead to...Right? Okay, I for one, thank you.
<> But, I think Brians main point was: He rode to the Elgin meeting on
his motorcycle, no matter the weather, didnt matter what the weather
channel reported, rain or shine, cold or warm, he
went. Likely, there were folks there, that drove their cages. When he
got home, he wanted to share his bike trip, and how wet and cold he got,
becasue we're all a bunch of Bikers, and he thought most of us would
enjoy hearing about it. <>I shared my ride to the HOG Rally in Hot
Springs back in early October. (get it?)

  3. I'm OK down to about 40....and then only for a short while. I don't have
any heated gear or anything. I know it gets quite nippy in those
    mountain passes.

O yeah, 40*, riding 60mph or more, is about----20* atleast
    (chillFactor).......so 40* is cold on a motorcycle, I don't care who you
are, how old, how young, how tuff,!!!!!
<>I meant that......40-50*...will not stop us from our Thanksgiving
Ride. But with all the leather, and what ever else, we all ---enjoy it
    (women and all).. a lot.more than in 95* (heat).........yeah

Most of the time, I'd rather be cold than hot. I think the bike is
one exception. The heat can drain you, but the cold really gets nasty
with slowing your reflexes, making you stiff, etc.

So, I guess in that one instance I'd rather it be hot than cold.

Clearly someone's killfile is a piece of crap. Clearly you never tried
to ride in the rain. Clearly you don't understand that short of a wet
suit lycra, you won't stay dry when you're being sprayed by the road
    conditions and the rain.

Maybe if you pay your bills and get off that welfare you're on, you'd
be able to get someone to fix that ragged killfile you have. I hear
that Nurick+Ass has a top notch one...he has even been known to
    killfile himself.

Sheeeat, Bill. I already have trouble keeping it from getting tangled
up in the spokes. What else do you suggest?

  10. no, that was the 500 mile, half day version of the Waltz Across Texas
Rally last April, the one your father and you didn't show up for. Joe
Stateman aka BeemerBiker rode it and I think had a good time, even with
the speeding ticket he got.. (he's such the speed demon ya know) <g>

So, you recorded more than that? Because, the list I saw had 547 miles
with 0 points. Would that list you're talking about be the same as the
list where you're listed as being associated with the Moran
    Foundation?

Misleading and kinda hard to tell, who did what.. One report was that "some"
of the participants of the "ride" were in disguise and concealing their
identity because they were expecting the Walkers to participate.. One such
report was made and later confirmed by another of the attendees..

It seems a little difficult to establish any credible recording of a competi
tive ride, when the participants don't know who each other, really are..
    IMHO... ROTFL..

  15. Those are two different things. WATR benefits the Scottish Rite
    Hospital for Children.
The Baylor CoM/Moran Foundation information has been posted several
times at your request, even as recently as three days ago. Evidently,
you have no real interest in either one and merely want to play with
    yourself.

LMAO... yep.. This newsgroup has already been subjected to all that story..
No need to expose them to furthur running around in circles.. LOL.

hmmm.. I don't think anyone has ever observed me anywhere with my name
obscured on a nametag.. Sheesh.. now we are talking about some real courage
of convictions, there.. huh .. "speedo" ?

  19. oh suuuuure you were there, you betcha.
That would be funny if it was true, you showing up and still not taking
part in the Waltz. <VBG> That's all bullshit, tho' and you know it.

Bill mouthed off, Bill got called on it and Bill chickened out.
That was 7 months ago, and you're still whining about it in threads that
have nothing to do with it ?
    Deal with it.

    LMAO... sure it is..
Lotsa' threads have nothing to do with it.. Lotsa' threads have nothing to
do with some of your other claims to fame that are so ridiculous, either..
hmmm.. I can't recall any thread on usenet that has to do with the bullshit
you threw at another poster on this group, when you declared that the death
of his daughter was due to his neglect of her, you useless son of a bitch..
You'll get over that one when I am dead and gone, or have whipped your fat
    ass, all over Texas..
You "deal" with the above comment, you trashy bastard..
