  3. sadly, RVLR doesn't proscribe the use of fog lights at the same time as
dipped lights, exceopt in the clause referred to about dazzle and
    visibility.

However, you can get 'em on that in any case. Fact of the matter is, no-one
ever gets done for it - I want legislation to make it impossible to use both
at once, and to bring fog lights into the MOT checks which they aren't at
present: I know this, my disco II has been through an MOT and a taxi test
with one of the front fogs broken.

  4. Tempting. However, what I was after, as I said, is to make it so you can't
have dips and fogs on simultaneously.

  5. Mine do... however, that would only stop the incompetent, not those who
wilfully turn 'em on for whatever misguided reason.

  6. That's OK if we don't get real fog. In seriosuly thick fog like we rarely
get now, ordinary rear lights just don't penetrate - RFLs *used properly*
when it's really foggy are actually a good thing.

proper use includes turning the fecker off when there's another vehicle in
view behind you, such as in traffic queues. The only one in a queue who
should have the RFL on is the tail-end-charlie.

The percentage of time where lit RFLs are doing something usefull is
0.0 followed by several thousand more zeros then a 1 at the end. If it
really is /that/ foggy, another car won't be closing at any sort of
speed so will still see your rear lights. Anyone with enough
intelligence to switch their RFLs off when a car's approaching from
behind will also have enough intelligence to flick their brake lights
or flashers a couple of times.

For the rest of the time, which is effectively 100%, all they do is
reduce visibility for everyone behind & mask brake lights.

I thought (waits for correction) that it was some construction
requirement that front fogs could only come on with dipped lights and
    not with just side lights.

You obviously haven't seen the fuckwits driving in fog.

Not sure why you would want to ban using fog lights with dipped lights.
That's usually the best combination as full beams just bounce straight
    back at you in fog.

Unless the fog's so thick that dip bounces back - in which case, sides +
    fogs...

Which hardly ever happens. So again, why have something that reduces
visibility for other users for the vast majority of the time they're
used, just because they may serve a useful purpose in an increasingly
small (& already tiny) number of situations? Makes no sense at all.
I've never used rear foglights & never will, apart from when there's a
**** behind me with front fogs on. Amazingly nobody's ever run into the
    back of me.

Where 'see' equals 'be dazzled by'.

Obviously not as despite having been driving for 26 years without using
foglights, nobody's ever driven into the back of me.

How many times have you been rear-ended in fog?

    Where you live.
You've probably never found yourself in fog so thick that you're not even
100% sure where the road is, have you?

Or anywhere else I've lived, from mid Wales to Dartford.
Yes, loads of times. I'd love to know how you think there'd be enough
difference in speed between cars in those conditions for someone not to
see normal rear lights in time.

How many times has someone ran into the back of you in fog?

Because, of course, everybody has a similar perception of an appropriate
    speed in poor visibility.
Last time it happened was just after I stopped beating my wife...

If the fog's so thick you're not sure where the road goes, nobody will
be going more than a crawl.
    Heh.

No I don't, I buy insurance because the law requires me to. I don't buy
insurance because a crane might fall on my car, or I might get hit by a
meteor, or a falling tree, or a badger that someone's launched from a
trebuchet, or a million other things that could potentially happen to
    me but never have.
If I felt I needed insurance for that, my safety gene would never let
    me ride a bike.
Oh FFS, you'll be saying 'think of the children' next. Tell me
something, do you carry powerful white & red lights in your car & on
your bike? No? What happens if you brake down with total electrical
failure on a foggy night & someone runs into your parked car/bike, you
    selfish ****.

  20. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Krusty
    That happened to me once.

Although I'm not totally sure it was a badger. It might have been a
penguin. It was going pretty fast.
