I was pondering on the way to work this morning...

Why don't bikes have fog lights?

If bikes came with fog lights, people would just take them off and replace
them with aftermarket mini carbon fibre fog lights that are too small to
    see.

Assuming that you mean _rear_ fog lights - "What's behind doesn't
    matter".

This is something that I never understood. I'm all for aesthetically
pleasing motorcycles, but replacing indicators with ones that are too small
to see seems really stupid. SMIDSY-tastic mate.

Do you see a lot of pedestrian crossings in 50mph roads? You Northerners
are a crazy bunch ;-). I do see your point however.

It doesn't have to be foggy. Yesterday on the M25, clear
visibility etc., in the car and I had to queue to get off
at Jct 25. The lorry behind me had to go on to the hard
shoulder to guarantee he didn't rear end me[1][2].

    [1] Fnarr, fnarr.
[2] As it happened, he stopped a couple of yards short be he
obviously didn't know that he could, IYSWIM.

Fog lights work by presenting a wide flat beam which is low and PARALLEL to
    the ground. Bikes lean.

LOL. Thats funny, because it was almost exactly this scenario that got
me thinking. Stopped at a set of lights on red and sure enough, there
was a 30 ton lorry bearing down on me at about 50 in a 30. I mean, It
ain't rocket science to stick an extra bulb on the tail and a switch
    on the bars.[1] Bastards.

    <sub-gripe>
*How* many cars did I see on the way to work without their lights on?
easily 10 (or more) on a 12 mile journey. Which is 10 (or more) than
it should have been given the fog (in the East Mids) this morning.
    Bastards.

    <sigh>

[1] Having said that, in this particular scenario, the traffic lights
would have been significantly brighter than any fog light.

I live in the east midlands, despite the light mist I reckon there was
still a good 1/4 mile of visibility.

Fog is when you can't see 50 yards down the road.

Why is it stupid? Why does it increase your risk of a SMIDSY?

How do you ride your bike if having too small indicators will place you
    in position of risk?

My Guzzi has *no* indicators neither, for that matter, did most of my
other machines past and present over the last 18 years. The only SMIDSY
I've had was on a straight road.

.... I reckon it was about 100 yds visibility going over the Trent at
7:30 a.m. and about the same in the vale of Belvoir. That's Fog, in my
    book.

On the higher ground it was, as you say, a light mist.

It may be because it's impractical to have the fog lamp far enough away
from the brake light to prevent it being masked by the fog lamp.

No indicators is fine, its when riders fit ones that are so small they are
invisible yet still drive like someone could see them.
