My brother-in-law's a french polisher and to get stains out of wood he's said that he'd lightly sand the wood, wipe a meths soaked rag over it and then light it (the wood, not the rag!). Apparently it helps bring the stain to the surface which can then be sanded out. [1] It might be more fiddly than using stuff from B&Q etc but it sounds more fun ) [1] Confirmed, http://lifeandhealth.guardian.co.uk/guides/diy/story/0,,2259804,00.html
Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Bear <stares at floor, shuffles feet> OK, confession time. When I were nobbut a young 'un[1] I had a Mamod steam engine[2]. Powered by meths, it was. Thing is, I noticed how meths would burn off without really touching whatever was underneath it. There's probably a really complicated reason for this, I found it by experimentation. Fascinating. And the sort of thing that should be shared with others. Thing is, I thought that a really effective demonstration could be accomplished by setting light to my kid sister's bed. While she was in it. I was right, thobut. She remembers it to this day. [1] Ask Nige for a translation, he'll understand. [2] I've grown up now, I have three.

I never realised how expensive Mamod engines were until recently when one of my mates put one on ebay [1] [2]. It was about 15 years old and he got over £250. [1 ]Retrieved from his mum's loft also. [2] Similar to http://tinyurl.com/6ph5cn inc. track and one carriage
