Netgear seem to not give a toss that their stuff doesn't work, so can anyone
recommend a DG834G alike from someone else? Basically a decent wireless
router with a built in ADSL modem. Good range would be nice as the house has
    pretty thick walls.

I've got a Belkin wireless card here that just about works OK, but everyone
else tells me to avoid them like the plague. OTOH it seems that Netgear
mostly produce decent stuff except for the WG311, which is a bit of a
fucker, as I'm loathe to buy more stuff from a firm that have fucked me
    over.

    In
I recently changed my 3COM router to a BT 2WIRE one like this

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BT-Business-H...ryZ44997QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Apparently they can be de BT'd to use on other networks.

It connected at 1mb faster than the 3COM ever managed, and has about 25%
more wireless range power showing. Apparently there's an illegal hack to
open a US power setting, that level of power isnt allowed in the UK.

Righto. One thing that's occured to me is that it'd be replacing an Orange /
Wanadoo Livebox, and I believe they're known for being particularly bad. I'm
going to try my current Netgear router out there and see if it works. If it
does, then I'm going to buy another, as at least I know that it'll work...

  5. I've always been well happy with Linksys gear. Not sure if they do one
    though.

We sell a lot of DLink stuff at work which seems v. reliable.

http://www.dsl-warehouse.co.uk/product.asp?pr=DSL-G624T Looks as if it might
    fit your bill ?

Might be available elsewhere cheaper ?

  6. Strange, I've not had any problems with my DG834GT apart from not
getting older kit to agree an encryption protocol with it. I rarely use
the wireless tho' as I've only 4 PCs in the Rechenzentrum and the PDA has
to be satisfied with USB to get the Guardian cryptic every day...

We have the cable version of this - it's quick and has good range:

I have the 834G and I'm very happy with it. Unfortunately I was daft enough
to buy 2 netgear PCI cards which are shite, and their lack of willingness to
fix the problem puts me off buying from them again. However, the seemingly
random nature of Wifi stuff makes me think it may be better just to buy
another 834 as I can take the one I have to the other house, try it, and
then know if it'll work or not. It seems to me that Wireless is still a bit
experimental given how much shite is sold.

So because the network cards are shite and don't work you are going to
replace the router instead? There really must be something in the
story about wireless radiation frying the brain :)
