FOAK: Wifi recommendation.

  1. You have an unusually warped mind? Even for this place.
Because if you're going to sling the dirt at them, then making sure it
is accurate reduces the opportunity for a smart comeback.

  2. In uk.rec.motorcycles, SD amazed us all with this pearl of wisdom:
I bought a Linksys modem/router and laptop card for 40 quid out of
PCWorld a couple of weeks ago. Piece of piss to set up (with some
telephone help) and has everything in the box for hard wired and
    wireless stuff.

It's -not.bad- but it does take some getting used to, it can be slow, it
can just drop the signal for no reason and I generally found it to be
not as good as wired and have gone back to wired. That said though, if I
really do need to play Doom while I'm sitting in the shitter then Wi-Fi
    is a good thing.

Totally agree - I have the DG834GT which has performed faultlessly since
the 5 minute installation a year ago.

Rope scribbled on the back of a napkin:
AOL - all the wireless gear here is Netgear and it "just works". Mind
ewe, me being me, I bought one of their "industrial strength" access
points as opposed to their normal consumer items.

What's the difference between this and 192.168.1.1 ?

Both you and Pipex suggest "0.1", but D-Link manual suggests "1.1",
which doesn't have the same boxes to fill in as Pipex's "0.1"
    screenshots.

PS "0.1" gives "The page cannot be displayed" error message.

If the manual says '1.1', use that. The exact address will vary
depending on the router and your current network config.

In fact, at this point, start a command prompt, type "ipconfig" and post
    the results here.

    Sort of.
    'old yer 'orses.

The BigBox talks to the internet.
The laptop does, too. Occasionally. And Slowly.

They do not appear to know that the other exists.

They've both had that big long code thing keyed in[1], and the
192.168.1.1 thing knows that they both exist.

I've tried setting up a w/l n'work manually, but it seems I need a USB
flash drive - or does that just save the typing?

Hmm... Dunno. I'd have thought so.

Does your lappy Wi-Fi connection report a signal strength?

What's the output from running 'ipconfig' on the lappy?

What's the output from 'ping www.google.com' on the lappy?

Who won the F.A. cup in 1923?
