Right. I've got this here desktop thing, wot I'm typing on, okay.

I've just taken delivery of a shiny new Inspiron laptop thing, which
    is WiFi ready, or somesuch.

What do I need to but to:

a: make them talk to each other - sharing files, etc.
b: makethe laptop talk to the outside world.
c: preferably from more than 2' away from the desktop

    TIA.

PS I know this has been done to death in the past, but I didn't
    understand word of it.

A brief shopping trip is all I'm looking for.

So, I go off to the shops, and ask for a "dabs"?

That'll sort me out, will it?

    What colour should I get?

Assuming you're on ADSL with something plugged into your PC's USB port ...

Get a wireless-enable ADSL modem from PC World, for example a D-LINK
    DSL-G604T.

Find out the ADSL username and password from your ADSL provider (probably on
the piece of paper they sent you when you signed up).

Unplug old ADSL modem from phone socket (leave it attached to your big PC, so
that if none of the following works, you can just plug back into the phone
socket and get on the internet to find help), plug new ADSL/wireless box into
    phone socket.

Connect laptop ethernet port to new ADSL/wireless box. Follow instructions
to configure new ADSL/wireless box (probably involving visiting
http://192.168.0.1/ and typing in a few details including your ADSL username
    and password).

Check that you can access the internet with your laptop through the new ADSL
    box, over the ethernet cable.

Follow instructions to set up wireless connectivity, remove ethernet cable
between laptop and ADSL box, cross fingers, hope wireless connection works.

Follow instructions to set up either WEP or WPA wireless security to keep
thieving pikey neighbours off your new wireless LAN.

Connect old PC to ADSL box using ethernet cable, check internet connectivity.
Determine IP address of each computer by typing

    C:\> ipconfig

    in a DOS box.

Uninstall zonealarm or other firewalls from each PC, or at least temporarily
    disable them.

Check that each PC can see the other by typing

    C:\> ping 192.168.0.4

(or whatever the address of the other PC is)

Set up file and printer sharing on each machine.

You're on Broadporn, yes? ADSL, not cable? Yes?

Good, you'll be wanting a wireless ADSL router and a LAN cable. I can't
recommend any particular brand, I have a Belkin that I've just had to
replace the power supply on. Other than that, it's been fine.

Plug the router into the ADSL line, plug the LAN cable into the router
and the desktop. Now fire up the Wi-Fi on the laptop and connect that.

Then call someone when it won't work.

    Easy.

Seriously, you'll need to configure the broadband username and password
on the router, this is done by connecting to it with a web browser. The
instructions for that are in the box the router came in...

You'll then need to set up wireless security. That's on the advanced
    course.

If you need help, I could probably pop down one day this weekend to
point and laugh^W^W^W configure it for you.

In all truthfulness if you're going out to the shops looking for a URL
I'd save some money and stick to gardening.

TBH I've bought stuff from DABS in the past and have had no problems
but, have recently used ebuyer because their stuff is a) in stock,
    b) cheaper and c) no more or less hassle than buying stuff from DABS.

    What are you on about?

Rope's told me the name of a product, which is what I was after in the
    first place.

Everyone has a different opinion. I like the Belkin set-up (the 54g
has dropped in price, too), other swear by other products and dislike
    Belkin.

The reason for pointing you in the Dabs direction is that you can have
a look at the different products, their capabilities, and ascertain
whether or not it is what you are after before parting with your cash.
Even better if your final purchase does was it says on the tin and is a
    bargain to boot.

When I was looking to go the wireless route I dug out old PC mags and
looked at a lot of new PC mags, anything to get info on undertaking the
wireless route. At that point in time, the 54G was new on the scene.
As well as that, I enquired on here too and the response for some
products was fairly even, so it wasn't possible to make a firm decision
from one to another, hence I found the Dabs website handy for its
product information at that point in time.

If you're going to purchase a product that you don't know much about,
it is best to do a bit of research before commiting yourself.

The Belkin gear we've got enables me to use t'internet upstairs at the
back of the house (primary PC downstairs at the front), and also
enables me to use a laptop in the garden.

Why do I get the surreal thought in my head of some sad sack wanking
away because of a spelling error, despite the fact they know what I
mean, and know that I know what I mean?

I was merely counterpointing the inclusion of a fatuous URL in one
reply with a facetious URL in another.
