Can anyone recommend a decent camcorder for 300 quid or under? I'm
looking for an all round family friendly piece of kit that I can also
use to upload guitar stuff to YouTube / Facebook.

    TIA

We got a Sony something or other[1] with a 40Gb hard drive in it.
    That works pretty well.

If you are doing guitar stuff, you might want to think about a
    spearate mic.
Camcorder mics are usually shite with music.

[1] Simialr to what Gavsta's Dad has got. I expect that he'll be along
presently to tell you about it.

And watch what you choose. My Sony has an AV IN, but on the fucking
base, not on the camera. Muggins 'ere only found out after I'd
    purchased the camera...

I think that there is a tax change (more) if they have an AV in,
'cos then they are a video copying machine and not a camera, so
someone needs to compensate the p0rn stars for lost income
due to illegal copying - or somehting like that.

This market distortion makes the manufacturers do weird stuff.

    Take care.

Above may all be crap - not sure.

Unless you strap the actual camera to the bike or helmet instead. Much
better pictures that way, but you have to be really careful of
vibration, especially where hard drive cameras are concerned. In fact,
you simply wouldn't use a hard drive camera to do it.

You forgot those that record directly onto SD cards. Someone of this
parish has one of those. Can't remember who it was.

You seen the video size? There are smaller cameras on eBay with higher
    resolution. And they're cheaper.

I didn't know anyone's guitar playing was good enough to have that
    effect on people.

They're not, however, close to the manufacturer's blatantly untrue (you
could even say, lie) that they're of 'colour TV resolution'. Although if
you read what it says exactly, it could be argued that they've very
cynically and intentionally written their camera spec with the goal of
misleading the customer into thinking the camera is a full-res one
rather than something that's not even close.

Probably very true, but that's not what I'm saying. The manufacturer is
lying about their product. It may be a good recommendation you gave,
however I'm not questioning that, either.

I am, however, very critical indeed of someone claiming a 512 x 384 is
'TV resolution'. It's not. It's not even close. It is, quite simply, a
lie. It's not even your standard webcam resolution (640 x 480).

In my case, I want something that I can use when surfing, kite-surfing,
snowboarding etc, which gives me footage that I can mix together with
footage taken on my mini-DV camera. That means I need full-res PAL, not
one of these mickey mouse resolutions.

I'd like it to be small and waterproof, and preferably light as well.

Whilst not doubting your statements as such, in that it might appeal to
the masses, it's not for me.
