  4. Perhaps this person grew up in Missouri, or his relatives grew up
    there.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_English_regional_phonology#St._Louis_and_vicinity

There are various regional dialects in the USA. Some dialects are
rhotic, in that speakers pronounce the final "R" in a word, while
others are non-rhotic and speakers drop the final "R".

The latter case can be noticed in the dialect spoken by both Blacks
and Whites in Virginia, the Carolinas, and parts of the Deep South.

But dropping the final "R" was also associated with the Ante Bellum
aristocratic ruling class, as the corruption occurred in England, not
    the USA.

However, Scots Gaelic and Irish Gaelic actually tended to emphasize
the "R" sound, and as culturally-isolated Scots-Irish immigrants moved
westward they *added* an extra "R" in the middle of words where non
    was intended.

So we hear Missourians say "warsh" instead of "wash", and the first
president of the USA was George "Warshington".

  8. Hi Jack! <Ooops, where did all those Homeland Security guys come from?>

Haven't looked in for a couple of days (flew back here Thursday
night to a little bit of drama -- no water; turns out my supply comes via
next-door and they'd turned it off when _they_ went away for a while).
They managed last week to steer a bunch of protons in each direction into
collision at all four detectors, so we've all seen collisions. There have
been some power and cryo interruptions but I expect they'll be trying for
multiple bunches and more collisions this week, if they haven't already
made it over the weekend. Official schedule called for collisions on the
3rd and they've got a big party booked into the Restaurant that night...

Just checked my e-mail: expect official collisions by Wednesday night.
(You didn't hear that from me, roight?)

The "bird and baguette" story concocted by The Register turned out
to be a load of crock; there was a substation problem, they did find feathers
and bread within the substation, the two were not connected.
