    How does that work then?

    That's utterly retarded.

Of course, you can get really good quality upscaling DVD players for
less than £40, so I can't say I have much sympathy.

    <hoping that Simian sees this>

Right, it turns out that the mobo frigs 6 channel output out of the
line in, line out and mic connectors - front two speakers come from
line out, rear two from line in, and centre and subwoofer from mic
    (like this http://www.asrock.com/support/faq/20080324.jpg)

Anyway, with the appropriate combinition of 3.5" splitters, I managed
to plug it all into my Sony AV amp, which supports 5.1 input, and it
    works!

So, my question is (and, please, any other AV heads feel free to join
in), is this in any way worse than digital output using S/PDIF?

I've just retired the DVD player from the living room, but it could be
    pressed back into service :)
If you recall, my mobo has a S/PDIF header, but no backpanel
connector. I was looking at getting a doohickey to sort this
    (http://www.glowtechnology.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=72) but
then found that the mobo enables 5.1 output thru the existing
connectors, and wondered whether the doohickey was worth getting.

    ok, ta.

On closer examination, the S/PDIF header bracket that Glow sell,
listed as an ASUS accessory (tho I can't find any reference to it on
the ASUS site) uses a 3 pin connector, while my Foxconn board has a 4
pin header. Google fails to turn up any such S/PDIF header bracket
using a 4 pin connector. Grrrrrr.

    It's a A7GMX-K, like this:
    http://www.foxconnchannel.com/product/Motherboards/detail_overview.aspx?ID=en-us0000382

The mobo manual [1] describes the header thus:
    pin 1 : +5v
    pin 2 : empty
    pin 3 : SPDIF_OUT
    pin 4 : GND

    Thanks in advance

Why didn't you just say so?!
    heh. I would appear so.

Belay that - much googling suggests that the bracket sold by glow,
despite being advertised as having a '3-pin connector', is in fact 3
pins in a 4 pin plug (described as 4-1, I think), which should fit my
    mobo header ok.

    We'll see.

And now, hopefully, we can put this thread to rest :)

The bracket arrived from Glow this morning [1], it was a matter of 10
mins to fit it, a quick bit of software config and it was happily
putting out 24bit at 96KHZ (according to the friendly screen on my AV
    amp).

So now it nicely puts out stereo for stereo files (e.g. MP3s), and
full digital for DVDs, which the AV amp happily decodes.

    <sigh>

I think I might be finished. All coming to a web page near you
    soon...
