Looking to set up CCTV, and wondered if a webcam would be any good for
    the job?

Just want to cover the back yard, from the window next to me PC.

    TIA

Prolly not. They rely on you being fairly well lit and are really
    designed to work close up.
Perhaps he don't want to. He might be more of a peeking through the
    crack type.

  5. He can have shifts of people in different time zones watching his
garden. Saves paying overtime and unsociable hours.

Bloke at work wrote some software to do this. Seems to do the trick and
I know there have been successful prosecutions in the US as a result.

I'll find out what it's called if you like

I used to use gotcha32 (http://www.gotchanow.com/) which worked fine for me.
Only starts recording if anyting in the view changes so saves smaller files.
Quality is basically how much you paid for your webcam.

Try x10.com, these yanks have plenty of solutions for what you intend. And
activate some anti-popup before entering the site.

Another one, which I have tried is Supervisioncam
    http://www.supervisioncam.com/
I've used it with a cheap (£30) Logitec webcam and it works very well.
