FOAK: VM hosting, with a twist

As some of you know, a couple of friends & myself have a colo box. Said
box seems to be playing up again and we're seriously considering
alternatives. Given our requirements, that would be "alternatives with
    root access".

There seem to be a bunch of services out there that would give you a
virtual machine for NotMuchMoolah but of course they're preconfigured
and the images don't necessarily offer all we need, even after we dumped
all the additional software we need on them.

Ideally I'd like to turn the current server into a VM image and find
someone to host that. Does anybody know of such a service or are we
stuck with the base image we get from a hoster?

I have used 34sp.com for a number of years - their support seems clued
up (you can generally get through to someone with a clue on the first
ring) - they can probably offer what you are looking for based on my
previous dealings. Mainly freebsd based (I think) but also have
    window boxes.

    Based in Manchester.

Their website has live chat that you can get through to support pretty
much 24/7 - might be worth a visit.

I use http://prgmr.com (their tag line is "we don't assume you are
stupid"), they provide bare bones VPS (no cpanel or other such shit).
They provide you with a minimal OS (choice of OS) on xen host, which you
can either build up yourself, or you can run your own kernel. The guys
who host it seem pretty helpful, so if you have a xen image then contact
them, they may well be able to accommodate you. It's based in the US.
I've had a couple of outages with them, but at least they're promptly on
the case and helpful when things do go wrong, and they give a month
credit if they breach SLA in any given month.

That looks pretty good, thanks. Unfortunately it also looks like
they've got a waiting list at the moment.
