    Our keeps turning itself off.

i.e. Turn it on, with the remote, sit down, then off it goes.

This happens two or three times when we get in at night, the
    occasionally during the evening.

Simple fix, or a trip to the skip?

Linda's patented "solution" of thumping it and swearing at it doesn't
seem to be working too well.

    It's fucked - I'll give you^h^h^h^h^h^h^h^h^h^h^h

    Choose one of:

    a) Get it repaired
    b) Buy one from a pikey supermarket. Will be cheaper than a)
    c) Buy a 42" HD LCD.

I'd go for c) but YMMV.

A thermal trip maybe? Try taking the back off & hoovering all the dust
out. If that doesn't work, I've used Comet's repair service a few times
in the past, & it's been surprisingly cheap. That was a few years ago
though, so things may have changed.

Mine did this a year or so ago, turned out to be a couple of dry solder
joints, the TV dude showed up, popped the back off, soldered them,
relieved me of £15, and it's been good since then.

Of course, having posted this my 7 year old TV is now bound to blow up.

Oh, I saw this on one of those programs about Americans - it's
    obvious:

either yourself or Linda has got the spare remote wedged somewhere in
    a fold of flesh.

  12. To test this theory, select channel for the night, then cover
IR receiver on telly with black electrician's tape (or better, aluminium
tape if you have it -- duct tape would also do).

It is also commonly dry solder joints on the coil. I had a television that
did exactly this and I have seen it with computer monitors. Trace the Ht
lead from the tube to board and solder all the large joints under the coil.
Be very careful with this area of the telly as it keeps a very high voltage
    charge for months.

  15. Which is why a resistive discharge stick should be at hand and used
    before anything is done.

I don't bother delving into TVs now - they're so cheap they get tossed.

    Heavens above, what a feedline.

I feel this bit needs more explanation, technique-wise, before I take
    the back off.

  19. On a CRT, the electron stream to the face of the screen is attracted
their by an extremely high voltage (Extra High Tension - EHT) of the
positive persuasion. This is usually around 10KV for a small black and
white telly/monitor, but can easily reach 25KV for a large colour set.
The circuitry that drives this isn't, in itself, all that deadly, but
the CRT acts like a capacitor which can store the EHT for ages after
    switch-off.

You don't want to be touching any o' that shit, no sirree. Mind you,
very few TV technicians have actually _died_ from it, just a few burns
and nervous tics; nothing to worry about, really.
