    No, not a plumbing question.

Through general thickwittedness, I've purchased some nuts M12x1.25 for
a 1/2" UNF stud. Obviously, they don't fit.

But a 1/2" UNF thread is 1.27mm pitch. Given that the nuts are only
about 20 pitches long, can I tap them out to UNF without problems?

Only asking because the nuts are a fancy shape [1]. If they were
standard, I'd stop being a tight-fised **** and buy new ones.

    [1] i.e. expensive

  2. If you do they'll fit, albeit not that well...

Are the nuts just cosmetic or holding anything vital?

For the former I'd try it and use some loctite to take up the slack.
For the latter I'd go shopping for the right nuts or replace the stud for an
    M12x1.25.

The difference in piths is 1.6%.

The difference in pitch is also 1.6%

I would be mostly concerned that the home-tapped thread
was just not up to snuff.

I cannot see that the pitch error could not be accomodated within the
material that needs to be removed unless the nuts are somewhat
longer than might reasonably be expected. Like about a foot longer
    than......

Draw it out. Seems to me that someone sufficiently motivated
should not have too much problem ---- belay that, there are BOUND
to be some pictures on the web already done for you.

If they are fancy main bearing nuts for your hyabusa then I wouldn't
recommend it. If they are to hold some fine tooled leather
tassles on to the bar ends then there will be no problem at all.

I think we should be told?

Any takers on "... to hold some fine tooled leather tassels on to the
    bar ends of my Hyabusa"?
