You are a mostly non smoker right? In all probability it is the baccy
which makes you feel sick it does that to people. The THC in the dope
is used by some cancer sufferers to stop the sickness feelings when
    taking nasty anti cancer drugs.

THC dilates the smaller blood vessels which maybe what happened. Part
of the initial lift is a slight oxygen high caused by slightly better
    blood flow to the brain.

  3. Um - there is. Cocaine works on the dopamine receptors in the brain and
over-use of cocaine lowers the efficiency of those receptors
considerably. The addict then has 2 means of restoring the levels to
normal - take another hit of cocaine or wean themselves off and allow
their body to readjust (which takes a long time).

So there is a measurable physical effect of cocaine addiction (reduced
numbers of dopamine receptors in the neurons) which in my book makes it
a physical as well as psycological addiction[1].

As you and Ben have both said this does take quite a long time though.
People *do* have to take quite a large amount of cocaine over a good
length of time to get physically addicted - but it does happen.

    Phil.

[1] I have seen it from the other angle - my father has Parkinsons and
has to take dopamine in large amounts to keep moving. And dopamine
overdose has a lot of similarities to cocaine addiction - mood swings,
paranioa and the like. Add the hallucinogenic tendancies of some of the
other Parkinsons treatments that he takes and you have a real fun
    time..

    probably not the best authority..

  5. Hmm. I would disagree with that statement. Have a look at how cocaine
    actually works.

Like most drugs it mimics the action of some of the bodies own systems
    - only in an unbalanced way. Opiates (morphine, heroin and the like)
bind to the same receptors as the bodies endorphin system but in much
much larger quantities than endorphin - so the high lasts longer and is
    more intense.
Cocaine does something similar with the brain neurotransmitters.

I know that it will remain a constant fact. Because it's something
    that's inside me.
That's completely different. We're talking about the very nature of
    being me.
I wasn't talking about human nature, I was talking about me.
If your circumstances change, then the implied conditions of the
original promise no longer apply. Ask any lawyer about the law of
    implication.

In my case, I'm talking about something entirely internal to me. no
external factors involved. I don't get addicted to things. End of
story. And I don't see why you're so concerned to prove me "wrong"
    about this.

not entirely. I don't smoke cigarettes, though I could get through one
without choking. I do smoke the occasional cigar or cigarillo (which I
    tend to inhale).
nope - I've tried hash cakes - same effect, though I tend to start
puking without the euphoria bit first.
yeah I know. I looked into some of the medical uses when my sister
found out just before Christmas that she has MS.

I smoked at the time[1], that's why I thought it was a strange reaction.
Maybe it was the effects of my blood pressure going too low or
something. Loz got me thinking when he posted about his daughter having
    trouble with the wacky baccy.

[1]Between 5 and 20 a day, roll ups and proper non pikey.

  9. My point was not that I know you better than you do. It was that never
(in terms of an unknown future) is a very foolish thing to promise.

I had some great times on acid and psylocybin[1] but soon realised that
better times could be had if you weren't off your face most of the time.
Tobacco seems to be the only thing I'm addicted to and I don't want to
give up enough to give me the willpower to stop.
I only tend to smoke dope when I'm pissed and even then very rarely.

  16. I used to get the "white death" every now and again. I'd get pale and
clammy and feel like I was going to pass out.

"Tolerance occurs, but physical dependence has not been confirmed; no
stereotypical withdrawal syndrome occurs when the drug is discontinued.
However, the tendency to continue taking the drug is strong."

So it's not a physical addiction.
