It's a right minefield out there. Any recommendations? I'm looking for "not
a lot" i.e. around 25sqft, for 3-6 months. Access quoted me 31 / month plus
insurance, which seems like a lot of dosh, yet that's their "special deal" -
half-price if you pay for three months up-front - and I think it goes up to 62
quid after that, although I'm still trying to work out if you can negotiate
    with these cunts.

I've already clocked that their insurance is a rip-off (Access quoted nearly a
tenner a month, yet http://www.insurastore.com is about three quid a month).

They're all near me - Big Yellow, Access, Safestore, Shurgard. They all want
a million details before revealing a price, they appear to have "deals" that
obfuscate the true picture, my head hurts and I was wondering if anyone has
any /useful/ advice about who might be a good option.

Go & talk to your local friendly farmer, they'd probably appreciate the
    money at the moment.

We've been doing this and found the same problems as you did. So we
went out and rented a lock-up garage for about half the cost.

Oh, right. Um, yes, uninsured. Not that it's worth much anyway.

Thats what I did, but beware of using it for furniture and soft goods
in winter, it WILL get cold, damp and mouldy.

My stuff isn't worth billions, but it's worth enough that I wouldn't leave it
uninsured. Maybe I'm less pikey than you. *shrug*

Is it stuff that you wouldn't mind losing as long as the insurance paid
out, or would you really, *really* want to hang on to it?

A friend of mine who's recently had stuff in storage was telling me that
they also rip you off on locks.

If you take out their insurance they tell you that it's only valid if you
used an approved padlock for the door ... just like the ones they happen to
sell. So they give you the choice between traipsing off to find a lock that
meets whatever bizarre criteria they specify, or you fork over the readies
there and then for an easy life.

When doing my mums stuff last year, I found a local(ish) one in Wigan. We
fitted the equiv of a 2 bed terrace contents into 1 unit

Best bet is to drive around your local area looking for converted disused
    warehaouses.

  13. Preferably, put a 20' container in a barn, unless the lff has a dry
    room.

If you know where you can get 20' containers for less then the cost of
6 months at a self-storage place, please let me know!

Are we talking about equivalent amounts of space...? Based on 'erselfs
(smaller) room at Big Yellow, six months worth of container-sized space
is going to be a couple of grand. I'm fairly sure that a used-but-good
20' will be less than that.

No, the OP's space requirement, which works out to around 270 quid I
think. I was looking at containers a while ago, & they seemed to be a
grand plus, not including gawd knows how much to hire a flatbed with
    crane to collect them.

I've forgotten how much space that was - and what period's that price for?
A mate just hired a crane/wagon to move one within his yard - £100.

    25sqft for 6 months.
    That doesn't sound /too/ painful.

    Right - a container's c.160sqft.
    No, I was surprised.

  20. Dirt cheap if you know where and when to look, and that's not hard.
For example, on ebay last xmas I could have got a 40'er for 350 quid.
Another 300 for pickup/dropoff, and bingo.
Only reason I didn't get it was the ripoff cost of getting it across the
    Irish Trough.
