Exactly what I have, Dell Axim X5(~£220), Compact flash GPS unit from a
bloke in Hong Kong(£50), 128M memory card with TomTom2 and all UK maps.

IMHO better than a TT go because it is a full Pocket PC as well. Mine gets
used as Sat Nav probably 20% of the time, PDA for similar and a games
machine/ebook reader for the rest of the time particularly on holiday. I
have hundreds of games/puzzles etc which stop me being bored to tears
whilst SWMBO lies there slowly toasting away.

Manic Miner and Jetpac on a speccy emulator or Monopoly/scrabble or any
number of other time wasters whilst sat on the beach with a long cool
    drink.

Hardly jargon, and I could say google, but I won't, and will instead,
    apologise.

ipaq is a brand of HP PDA ( Hewlett Packard handheld PC) 2210 being the
    model number.
Tomtom3 is the name of the nav software that I use.
You have to pay for them (bout EU169 AIUI) but they're only (as far as I
can tell) updated once a year. I'm waiting for the next update.

Almost certainly. Most GPS receivers output their data in a standard
format and the software can look for that on any convenient serial port.
All you need is the right cable, or a bluetooth connection.

I've considered this, but I like the voice (which I couls run by
headphones). I don't have a tank bag, and I'm a bit worried about the
vibration and damp affecting the the electronics. IME the GPS unit should
work in the bag as well. Mine works in the kitchen, much to my surprise.

The difference is that they provide a real time location of your physical
position on the map. The really clever bit is the navigation algorithm
that will calculate the fastest route from where you are to where you want
    to be.

Most will also allow you to plot alternative routes avoiding roadworks and
so on. Some will autmotically download real time traffic data to avoid
    traffic jams.

They then (usually by voice, but sometimes only graphically) where to turn,
    and what to do.
I think some of the Garmin units might. The PDA based ones I see are aimed
at drivers and roads, but it would be ultimately dependant on the map
available. Some linux based ones will let you use your own scnas of any map
    you like.

It's a bit convoluted, but what I do is:

    1. Go to www.streetmap.co.uk & find the area I'm interested in, then
click in the middle of the scale range to set it to OS Landranger(ish)
scale where it shows byways etc, then hit 'Large Map'. That gives you
    something like
    http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=406360&y=146120&z=4&sv=406360,14
    6120&st=4&ar=Y&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf&dn=512

    2. Use PSP to screen-grab the map, then repeat steps 1 & 2, stitching
them together until you've got the full area you want (it helps to have
a lot of RAM to do this!).

    3. Open GPS Utility (http://www.gpsu.co.uk/), load in the map created
    above, & calibrate it.

    4. Markup all the byways etc you're interested in as routes, then load
    them into your GPS.

You only have to do steps 1-3 once for each map, so it's not as bad as
    it sounds.

Sounds a bit convoluted. Best I've come up with so far is TrackLogs
digital mapping coupled with a Garmin GPS unit:

    http://www.tracklogs.co.uk/cgi-bin/publ/user.cgi?obj=dmap

But I think for the time being I'll still with an Explorer stuffed
    into the Camelbak.

No roads must equal no speed limits, so that's about right.

  11. Google for "MemoryMap" - OS map based GPS. Fantastic piece of software!

I've got a piece of paper with "Kitchen" written on it.
Only works in the kitchen though.

    That looks pretty good.

I'm a bit wary about taking my Ipaq mountain biking though. First bit
of a rain and it'll probably give up the ghost.

Garmin and Tracklogs are still looking best I think.

No, I;m sure that can't be right. Surely it still says 'kitchen' wherever
    you take it?
