I've also been wanting to get one, as an xmyth pressie for Jude, so
any replies addressing possibilities of hand-held devices, or ones
linking with an existing GPS (Garmin GPS3+) or PDA (Palm V) would also
be appreciated. Must give voice and visual turn instructions.

Garmin Quest. Going for less than £400, can be used hand held and in
car (& on bike with mount). Voice & screen directions, street level
mapping / autoroutung for the whole of the EU (if you don't get a US
    import).

One thing for bike use, is the screen and button size are a bit small,
so if you've got les than perfect eye sight, and wear big heavily
padded winter gloves, then there are better bike units (2610 for
    example).

    cheers

As a follow up, i have hear you can get a hand held PDA such
as the Dell Axim and put tom tom on it, being a complete novice
how does this work out where you are?

Can any PDA's have 'tom tom' on it? I have been offered
tom tom software (new) for £50.

I've been using a Tom Tom Go for a few months now.
Its been all over the UK, France and Germany.
Its not let me down yet.
Its an easy to use idiot proof gadget, you can download custom "points of
interest" such as the "UK Speed Camera Database", and set audible and visual
warnings for when you approach these "Points of Interest".
The Tom Tom Go is an easy to use all in one transerable unit.
It has its plus points, it has a few minus points, but on the whole I'd give
it a 9.5 out of 10 on my list of favourite gadgets.
    Check out http://www.tomtom.com/ and also
    http://www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/ for good pricing.

I bought a TomTom Go a few weeks back used it on a trip to the UK (I'm in
the Isle of Man). Dead easy to use, loaded it up with the GATSO Database,
which worked very well. Took all the stress out of looking for destinations
    in strange cities.

Just got a new car with sat nav built in, so selling the 'Go' on eBay. I
paid £412.00 for mine from Amazon and with a few hours left to go, my one on
eBay is at £410.00. Hopefully whoever wins actually pays.

You get a GPS receiver with the software. I'd go for the bluetooth
    personally
Ask if the GPS unit is included. If not, you can get them cheaply enough
for non Tomtom branded, which should still work. You might find it's
    cheaper buyingthe package though.

Got an ipaq 2210 with tomtom3 and blue tooth receiver. I got car mount
    with chargers as well.

Best GBP400 I spent. It's not perfect, and they keep building bloody
roads, but it's a *huge* improvement on my past methods.

Any chance you could rephrase that for the hard of thinking? Are you
saying that someone in possesion of a pda would need to obtain a) some
software, presumably downloadable via the PC interface and b) a GPS
receiver as a separate piece of hardware?

If so, could an existing GPS unit be used and just somehow connected
    to the PDA?

FFS why must people speak in jargon all the time. If only answers
would not assume any knowledge on the part of the reader, like what an
ipaq is and what tomtom3 is.
Can't you download up-to-date road maps, then?

Now i understand a bit more, a Ipaq is the display bit correct?
TomTom3 is the latest software bit correct?
The bluetooth receiver is the bit which pick up the sat's correct?

Hmm sounds like a good setup, might be able to set the display
onto my bike as well, have the reciever elswhere i guess.

And on a similar but related note. These GPs systems seem to be
    glorified road maps.

What should someone get if they're mostly off-road, but would like a
map with footpaths, bridleways, RUPPS, BOATS, etc on?

Contour lines would be handy as well.

In fact, basically an OS 1:25000 map with a little GPS arrow that says
    "You Are Here".[1]

[1] I already use OS Explorer and a compass, so don't suggest that.

That's not jargon, those are the product names.

    Ipaq - HP's PocketPC2003 standard PDA
TomTom3 - GPS / Mapping Software for above PDA.

Now PDA is Jargon, but i've seen you use that one..
