just along the A38 from Longford at Coombe Hill (opposite the turning for
    Cheltenham) is the Swan Inn
    http://www.swanatcoombehill.co.uk/

I haven't been there for years, as I've moved to S.Wales but friends from
Hignham still use it as their local.

Of the city centre pubs, none are memorable. The pub in the docks is quite
nice because of the location, Dr Foster's IIRC.

The Coal House at Apperley: nice menu including Steak on the Stone; outdoor
    garden with riverside view.

Not exactly Gloucester, I would have thought about/at least half an hour to
get there from the centre. Along those lines though, is The Golden Hart at
Nettleton Bottom. The Cheeserollers at Shurdington isn't too bad either, 4
real ales on tap on Friday. I've not been in any pubs in the city centre for
several years now, excluding Wetherspoons but that was singularly unpleasant
    on a Friday and Saturday.

    Rusted and ropy.
    Dog-eared old copy.
    Vintage and classic,
    or just plain Jurassic:
    all words to describe me.
