FOAK: Plasterboard walls and LCD TVs

We're looking at getting a TV for the bedroom, but don't have the space
    for a normal CRT.

Looking at prices of LCD sets these days (17" for £230) that seems to be
    the way forward.

The weight of the TV and it's wall-mount will be in the region of 4 to
4.5kgs - I reckon, with the use of the correct rawlplugs I should be OK
to do this, but, not being a DIY expert, can't be sure.

    Does anyone know the answer?

  3. In uk.rec.motorcycles, SteveH amazed us all with this pearl of wisdom:
I'd be more worried about drilling through a pipe or cable.

  4. As long as it's not a plasterboard dividing wall you'll be fine. If it is
you'll have to use proper plasterboard fixings or, preferably, find some
timber to screw into. I've put a couple of those CRT telly brackets up onto
a brick wall with the 2" screws they came with and they were solid.

You'll miss all the cables as long as there are no sockets in the immediate
vicinity that might go upwards to, presumably, the loftspace - cables are
    not meant to go diagonally.

It's a dividing 'stud' wall between 2 bedrooms, I know to use the proper
plasterboard plugs, and have a pipe / power detector thingie.

I'd say it _should_ be OK....

  6. You'll be fine then - s'not too heavy. I'd still try to screw into the
    timber if I could though.

What's the worst that could happen? If it falls down you put it in the box
and take it back to the shop :)

  7. SteveH formulated on Thursday :
If it is a solid brick wall and drilled/plugged properly, then no
problem. If it is a stud wall you need to be much more careful....

The best way is to fix to the timbers in the stud wall, even if you
have to fix a length of timber on top of the plasterboard horizontally.
Second best would be toggle bolts. These have spring 'wings' which pass
through a small hole, then open up to grip the back of the board as you
    tighten them.

Toggle bolts should be adequate, because the pull from an LCD is
straight down, not pulling at an angle as would a CRT type TV bracket.

Cheers, was sort of what I was thinking - although hadn't thought of the
toggle bolts - which I've previously used to screw a coat rail to a
    wall.

Get the screw-in rawlplugs especially for plasterboard.
Don't bother with the metal ones, the plastic ones are
    fine.

Use a phillips screwdriver and punch it through the wall
to make a nice even hole, then screw the rawlplug in.

Should take that weight no problem if you use a few.

Aye, thought so, just wanted to see if anyone else knew a bit more than
    me first.

Of course one should check there is enough freespace behind the board for
    them to open in.
Oh and they're a *right* bugger if you need to move the fitting - bloody
massive hole suddenly appears in your plasterboard :)

I've found the plastic spiral screw in ones to be the best - all the others
LOOK like they should be better, but they never seem to be.

Our last 2 houses have been new, and you don't get anything
but plasterboard walls. I learnt my mistakes by trying to
fit a different light into the ceiling in the kitchen of
the first house. The hole got bigger and bigger as it pulled
more and more plasterboard out with the wrong type of rawlplug!

I wouldn't use anything else now, and if you buy them in
bulk from RS, they're very cheap for a pack of 50. B&Q
charge something like £7 for half a dozen with screws!

The curse of the new house. We've had 3 of the bloody things now, but I
tend not to screw stuff to the walls unless I absolutely have to (or the
mother in law is here to supervise).

I'm having 2nd thoughts about this, though. Much as I like the idea of a
TV in the bedroom, I don't think I'd actually use it.

I suppose it was my way of trying to sneak a TFT monitor past the wife
    ;-)

How high on the wall do you want it? Might be a case of "Quick!
