Got a 1720 series router, console cable etc.

Can hyperterminal into the thing, then when I hit break to abort the loadup
of the config, I get the helpful rommon 1> prompt, but then it refuses to
    accept any keyboard input...

What am I doing wrong?... Trying to learn how these Cisco things work, but
cant do so unless I can get into this router... I have the password recovery
procedure here, but now Im stuck.

    Any pointers?...

You don't seem to have much luck with console cables and networking
    equipment do you?

If you let it boot up into IOS, can you get to a login prompt, press
return and fail to log in ? If not, this suggests that either the
router's serial port is broken, or that you're not connecting to it
    correctly.

Also, hyperterm is utter crap, you're likely to be more successful with
some other terminal emulator. E.g., teraterm.

Why do you have to use a term emulator ? Cant you telnet to the IP in
windows "dos", and just enter the details from there from a connected
workstation to the router (assuming all is working on that side, and
possibly that you have DHCP etc all working enough for the machine to be
configured with networking correctly so it can see the router).

Thats how I do it anyway. Couldnt be arsed with all that serial bollocks
    etc.

He needs to reset the telnet/console etc. passwords on a Cisco router.
To do so requires a console connection to get into the router before
the operating system loads. As has been suggested elsewhere, either
the console cable or the console port is knackered.

Long shot - try the console cable in the aux port.

    Nope :-(

But thanks everyone who replied... got it sorted in the end... It was
Hyperterminal being shit. I downloaded Teraterm, and about 5 minutes later
had a nice fresh router asking me if Id like to go through the initial
    config settings :)

    I am now Happy....

Or HyperTerminal is shit.... Why the **** it would allow the break command
to be sent,, but then crap out at sending any other keystrokes is a
    mystery...

    Cheers peeps.

Ah right. I assumed you could do all that jazz from the telnet, but I guess
if you lose the pwd then you are fucked arent you and have to do that
    business.
Ill keep that on file (just in case I ever need to it myself).
Makes me recall the good old old days with them old terms you used to get
and the old RISC UNIX machines etc.

  10. Hint - the router isn't up. Hence no IP stack is loaded. Hence no
    telnet capability.
Then you have obviously never fixed a non-working router or configured
    one from new.

  11. It is a crock of poo for that, I suspect it maybe an OS thing as well.
Last time I needed to use HT I could send a break successfully from
    W98 but not NT.
