I'm struggling at the moment to remove the previous 12 layers of paint
put on by a previous owner.

What's the thoughts on Nitromors? Will it feck up the glass fibre?

  4. After 12 coats its probably 'fecked' anyway!
Relabel the Nitro as 'etch primer'? [1]

[1] I haven't really got a clue on this bit.

Ah I've been here once or twice.
The best way to remove it is a big HD orbital sander with nice coarse
non clogging paper. It doesn't take as long as you would expect but you
MUST wear a proper filtered mask.

As for the repainting. Just go along to a large yacht chandler and buy
cans of proper yacht enamel. International is the biggest name. Osmosis
treatment if you need it. Primer and top coat.

Roller application is the way to go. No need to brush it over. 3 coats
    perhaps.

Standard Interlux for white. Premium is more fade resistant for colours.

On our Etchell (day racing keel boat) I just did the osmosis coating and
antifouling (no paint) below the water line. Don't know if this is
    standard practice.

  6. I can tell you from personal experience the old formulation of Nitromors
certainly did **** the gelcoat, but that was on a ShiteOldScim, so
didn't matter. Scim owners have said the new Nitromors doesn't eat into
it the same way, but your mileage, as always, may go up as well as down.

    Hmmmm...

Based on how hard the paint is baked on - I think the Nitro is the only
way. What I've been doing is bunging it on a smallish section, then as
soon as it's bubbling scraping off the paint and then 'washing' it all
    down with course wet'n'dry.

Theory being that the water will remove any errant Nitro before it eats
too much of the hull. So far it's looking OK and I'm getting down to
the gel coat and no further. Actually the original gel coat doesn't
look too bad at all - a bloody site better than the peeling paint
    anyway.

I've been filtering it through a fag... Is that the same?

    Also I am working outside.

I can't find any paper (apart from wet and dry used very wet) that
doesn't clog in 3 seconds flat.
Sounds about right - I've got a little man from the marina who is going
to do the anti-fouling when he lifts it on his crane thing prior to
bunging it back in the water. So I'm only doing from the bottom of the
    sides of the hull upwards.

Oddly it looks quite good - apart from the odd scratch from a nasty
    lock or two.
That's what I am doing at the moment and hoping the whole boat doesn't
    go all wobbly.

  10. Sounds like a plan and it seems the current Nitromors is indeed more
FG-friendly than before. Doesn't it amaze you how many sheer bloody
square feet there are on a hull when you're doing it a bit at a time?

It's only a small boat (24 feet) but you are right - the hull is
fecking huge. From the ground to the gunwales is about 6 feet - and
then there is the cabin side and roof...

Perhaps it would be easier to torch it?

That was also a tempting thought - it was just the rebuiding the hull
from scratch afterwards that put me off.
