Two of the lad's best mates are national standard mountain bikers, one
XC, one downhill. They all get together occasionally to make their own
videos of bicycle derring do for Youtube. One of them has just had a new
camcorder that does HD 1080p quality.

Anyone know of good *free* editing software? They can only find suites
that require downgrading to 'standard' DV quality.

    Windows Movie Maker?

It's what I've used to edit 720p videos from my happy-snap Canon.

The lad found something (Coyote?) that converted the files so that Movie
Maker didn't barf on them, but they were hoping to stay 1080 ?. I know
nothing of all this technology. I suspect that any kind of magic lantern
moving image of their antics will suffice at the end of the day.

Hmm, Linux, with no windows port but available as a 'Live' USB thingy.
Mentions HDV 1080 (AVCHD) though so I'll have a look - thanks.

I know teh sqrt of fuckall about video editing, but a friend of mine
used the free trial version of Sony Vegas successfully, trying his hand
at HD movie making. 30 days use, IIRC - mebbe enough to see if they
    can produce anything worth watching.

QuickTime that came with your Mac will happily chug through 1080p,
iMovie (which came free with your Mac as part of iLife) will happily
    play with 1080p too.

If you really know what you're doing then Final Cut Pro is sitting on
ThePirateBay for OSX (needs Rosetta installed though).

    In communiqué <ihq7vn$n1$-september.org>, BGN
Makes fingers crossed in warding off the devil sign. Strictly no
    iAnythings in this house.
The kdenlive application running from a bootable USB debian installation
looks up to the job on a suitably powerful box. Whether the lads can get
their heads round the interface and effects is another matter. SirPip
has the right of it. Just waiting for the owner of the camcorder to
email a clip in its native file format to see if kdenlive will open it.
It can certainly render to 1080p 50Hz. Even manages it running on an
NC10 given a very short clip and half an hour.

A car is quite expensive for most people too, but generally they don't
    steal them.

    Point of Order, Sir.

About 100 people a day do just that.
