It's simple. The image size for a standard 35mm camera is 36mmx24mm. Say
you do a print on 12x8. Now, crop the original neg by about 10% all round,
and print the resultant cropped neg at 12x8.

The second print will look like it's been taken with a longer lens.

Clear? Ask me about camera movements...

AFAIR one of the new Canons has as full-size sensor. Can't remember
which model it is/was but it should be easy to find out by checking the
    price tag :).

Actually, I just CBA to dig out the correct issue of AP here.
Well, that's true for just about every manufacturer that went from
    manual focus to out-of-focus...

  3. True. My D100 is 6.2MP, and even cheapish compacts beat that nowadays,
but as I point out in the office to those wondering why I hang onto the
Nikon: "How much do you think the lens costs on a £250 happy-snappy?"

All the pixels in the world are worthless if the lens is crap.[/QUOTE]

Cue The story of the 2MP Lumix, which showed up a whole cartload of
6MP cameras in a test by c't a while ago.

This is one of the reasons I like SLRs. I can choose how much (or how
little) quality I have in the lense.

Having said that, the Konica I got has a fairly good hexanon lense
    built in.

If the Automation on the camera had another mode other than "My Way or
the High Way", we'd be having this conversation in about a years time.

Johannes Gerber scribbled on the back of a napkin:
They all do that sir. This is why I've got a small cabinet full of high
quality MF gear (so it's my fault, not the cameras) and a lowish-spec
digital "press button now, take picture later" bridge camera.

    <pedant mode>
A camera can be a SLR without having changeable lenses.
Having changeable lenses does not make it SLR.

  8. Oh, I'd like it allright. It's just that If I'm going to spend cash
I'd like to spend it *properly*.
Ditto. Half way through the 5th film in less than two weeks, and I'm
not actually out to photograph. Must Start Own Development Or Buy
    Decent Digicam.

I was highly tempted, having read the review in this month's Digital
Photography (or whatever), but luckily, Currys restocked on 350Ds just
    in time.

  10. I don't mind the automatic modes, providing there's a "bugger off and
let me do it properly" manual overide (in whatever form). Complete MF
has it's advantages, but since there are no fully MF digital cameras
this side of serious custom stuff, I might as well get AF. I can
    always turn it off.

  11. I've just had two films developed, taken on my Olympus Mu2 compact. One
roll dated from skiing in February, and the other from summer in Corfu.

Sin of pride or not, I was pleased to see just what decent results can
be obtained from the sort of camera the technophiles scoff at.

  12. Olympus compacts have always been bloody good little cameras, dating way
back to the 1/2 frame ones. I have an XA-1 which has taken some
excellent pics over the years on those plentiful occasions when I've not
had my bigger kit with me.

**** the technophiles, most of them couldn't take a pic to save their
    lives.

Sarah has an XA-1 that I got her for Xmas 1982, but it's sort of worn out...

  15. Exactly. Modern technology makes it easier to tidy things up, but
composing in the viewfinder is a useful knack.

If I have, I'm not sending them to you. You didn't "come through" with

Now, now. I'm talking about random stranger's tits. It's quite
    different.
