So, selling the GSX-R - don't really have the time to have people coming
round to the house to look at so considering my options.

Dealers won't buy this time of the year by the look of it, but they all
offer a "sale or return" type thing where they stick it in the shop and
basically attempt to sell it with a bit of commission stuck on the top.

Is this a reasonable approach? TBH as long as I get above £3k for the bike
I'm not _deseperately_ worried about the odd £250 and if the bloke can sell
it with me expending zero effort, I'm all for it.

Pros : Dealer finance available, dealer backup available (to the buyer),
    more 'walk through' trade.
Cons : have to leave bike, documents etc at dealer - have to assume they're
honest and aren't going to strip it for parts etc.

Any thing else? Any one sold a bike in this manner?

  2. I really wouldn't. Dealers don't have that much incentive to flog it,
and so won't make the effort, and buyers usually won't get a warranty or
the normal dealer care and protection, so tend to shy away. You say
there's dealer back-up available: I'd check that very carefully.

Also, and this is worth considering, when dealers have gone bust with
SOR bikes in their showrooms, the pour owners have had a a hell of a
time getting their bikes back, because the liquidators take everything
and sorting out who owns what takes ages.

And dealers will be going bust this winter.

    Stick it on Ebay.

Having failed to sell the CBR on eBay or through the local rag, I took
it down to Giant Motorcycles of Brands Hatch to be sold on SoR (1). We
agreed a price that Mr Giant could put it in the showroom at which
would ensure that we both got sensible money from the sale. A few
weeks later it's been sold, I've got my asking price and he's made a
bit of profit ... job's a goodun as far as I can see.

I retained all documentation for the CBR until it was sold, thus
maintaining my title to the bike. Giant have given the new owner a
warranty as part of the sale hence the mark-up.

From what I can gather dealers vary greatly in the way that they
handle SoR, so shop around until you find one that suits you.

    (1) Having tried a couple of dealers locally and not been happy with
    their terms/commission rates.

Hmm, so we've got one "They're going to go bust and take your bike".

    One "it worked fine"

And one "claim on the insurance" (at least that's what I think Porl is
    saying).

    Ho hum.

No, but I must admit the S&R thing does leave me a little uncertain - it's
mainly to do with leaving the paperwork/bike in the showroom - I have
visions of them nicking all the good bits.

Cause bike shops sell loads of second hand bike parts yeah?

....and those mechanics, they've loads of time spare, haven't they?

In this case I think your mistrust and paranoia is quite irrational, I
mean most dealers can't even fit people in for a service for a few days,
they just wouldn't have the time to nick bits.

Plus if your bike is stock, what are the good bits?

Read Elly's post again, Dan. She retained all the paperwork here -
the dealer didn't get it until the sale was confirmed. Whilst I take
TOG's point (except in this respect) you should bear in mind that not
all dealers are created equal and I feel that SoR is a reasonable way
to punt a bike out with little or no effort from the owner.

Choose your dealer carefully, make sure that they give you a
commitment to a firm price in your hand, that they will offer a
warranty out of their cut, that their insurance covers your bike when
it is with them and that you retain the paperwork and title will pass
from you directly to the purchaser - and everybody will be happy.

    Good luck.

Well the one I am considering (Oxford motorcycles, center of Oxford) is
suggesting I look for £3250 for the bike, which will give them some margin
to play with on their side (this is fine AFAIC - even if it is less then
it's necessarily worth) - so if they sell it (whatever they sell it for) - I
    get £3250.

He has said that effectively that he is selling the bike, therefore any
returns would be to him, not me. The insurance apparently does cover
    vehicles on their premises.

The only problem (possible) is that he is suggesting it's a good idea to
leave all the docs with the bike as it makes it a lot easier to sell to a
reluctant punter - ie "Yes, you can take it away now" as opposed to "hang
about whilst I try and phone the owner and see if he'll sell it" - but this
means leaving the V5 and the like with the bike.

No reason to THINk the dealer would be dishonest - but the potential would
be there - hence my concern.

How would S&R compare to using Ebay? :)

My brother used a large dealership in Liverpool to sell his bike when
he emigrated, it saved him the hassle of trying to sell it himself.
IIRC the charge levied by the dealership was dependant on the length of
time the bike spent in the shop.

Keep hold of the documents, it may help you get your bike out of the
    premises if they go bust.

Dealerships are going bust all over the place. Only today I found out
that 3 quite large dealers went bust. Ron Parkinson in Colchester,
Redline in Colchester, and In2 in Kettering. Luckily none of them owed
our firm any money, but the Frank Thomas rep[1] for the area wasn't very
happy as they were all accounts of his and heavily into FT stock. No-one
had any idea they were on their way down the tubes.

[1] Met him by accident at a dealers, turns out he's an old old riding
    buddy of mine from Bedford.

If you paid it using your credit card, now would be a very good time to
talk to the credit card company rather than trying to chase the
    dealership...

Don't be daft. Blaney wouldn't use a credit card.

Blaney will have sent Trustful Youssef from Bombsite Camels across via
the land bridge, with half-a-dozen Bactrians and a string of goats as
a deposit. They will have left some hefty deposits on the showroom
    floor, too ...
